“HeartStart HS1 Home” is a home product of the “HS1 series”, the first AED approved for purchase without a doctor’s prescription in the United States. This July will mark 20 years since AEDs became available to the general public in Japan in 2004. The installation locations of AEDs have gradually expanded to public facilities, sports facilities, and places where many people gather, but in the future, we will move to an era where AEDs will be installed in homes. Philips aims to improve the lives of 2.5 billion people a year by 2030, and aims to help people live better health and fulfillment through innovative technology. By popularizing the home-use AED “Heartstart HS1 Home,” we aim to contribute to achieving this goal by helping people protect the lives of those around them.
Current state of emergency services
In Japan, more than 90,000 people die from sudden cardiac death every year, and this number is approximately 35 times as many as deaths from traffic accidents and 63 times as many as deaths from fire accidents (Figure 1). 250 people die per day, or one person every six minutes. On the other hand, the time it takes for an ambulance to arrive is increasing year by year, and the average arrival time for an ambulance in 2022 will be 10.3 minutes, and the survival rate will drop by about 7 to 10% for every minute that passes after cardiopulmonary arrest occurs. In order to increase the survival rate even a little, it is necessary for those who were present to carry out life-saving activities as quickly as possible, even if it is just one minute or even one second. In fact, according to a report by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the rate of return to society after one month was 3.3% when cardiopulmonary resuscitation was not performed, but 42.6% when cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation using an AED were performed. It is said that the temperature rises up to (Fig. 2).

Why do you need a home AED?
Approximately 67% of cardiopulmonary arrests in Japan occur at home (Figure 3). Additionally, in a unique survey conducted by Philips, 68% of respondents said it took more than 5 minutes to retrieve and return to the 24-hour accessible AED (Figure 4). Considering these
backgrounds, the effects of installing AEDs are expected to be particularly effective in private homes and densely populated apartment buildings, and installing AEDs for home use is effective in situations where there are people living in the same household who will perform the rescue. It’s possible. Countermeasures such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators and wearable automatic defibrillators are available for people at high risk of cardiac arrest, but there have also been reports of people being saved using home AEDs.
As Japan’s population continues to age, it will become even more important to install them in homes with the highest risk, in order to protect the lives of those around us.

Current status of AED use
In 2022, only 4.3% of the patients with cardiopulmonary arrest witnessed by the general public used an AED, which shows that the usage rate is extremely low. Reasons include not knowing where the AED is, not having enough AEDs installed in the area, not being installed in an effective location, not commensurate with the size of the facility, etc. Another issue is that there are still very few citizens in the area.
Not only those at risk of heart disease such as those undergoing treatment for heart failure, myocardial infarction, and
cardiomyopathy, but also those with symptoms that suggest heart disease, and lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes,
arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. If you or your family members are aware of any of these symptoms, please visit your doctor first to avoid heart disease risk.In addition, in order to protect the lives of your loved ones, keep an AED nearby and use it in case of an emergency. It is important to remain calm and be prepared to respond.

Points to note when handling AEDs
AED is a medical device for lifesaving treatment. Once an AED is installed, it is important to regularly check the AED’s indicators and the expiration dates of consumables so that it can be used at any time.
AED installers and managers are requested to confirm the following for quality assurance and safety management.
When installing an AED, appoint an AED administrator, perform maintenance and inspections recommended by the manufacturer, and manage the device so that it can be used at any time. In particular, for consumables such as electrode pads and batteries, attach an AED management display label with the expiration date on the device or bag in an easy-to-see location, and make sure to check the expiration date and replace it within the expiration date.
AED installers and managers should check the expiry date of
consumables, etc. specified on the AED management display label. AED installers and managers should contact the contact information of the manufacturer, distributor, etc. when an unexpected situation occurs with the AED, when it is transferred (limited to those licensed for the highly controlled medical device sales business), and when it is disposed of. to be. Check how the manufacturer or distributor provides information (notification of replacement timing, etc.). Electrode pads are disposable and cannot be reused.
Be sure to read the attached document.
