In the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Iwate Prefecture received a large amount of relief money and various forms of support from Taiwan, and exchanges continue to this day. Hualien City and Morioka City, which suffered major damage in the recent earthquake, began exchanges in 2002 and signed a friendship city agreement in 2019. We have deepened our relationship through mutual visits such as participating in the Morioka Autumn Festival.
In Iwate Prefecture, fundraising activities began immediately after the earthquake, and there was a growing desire to return the favor for the support received in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Iwate Nippo has previously published projects to convey our gratitude to Taiwan, and this time as well, we wanted to bridge the feelings of the people of the prefecture, which led us to create this project. In the paper, along with a photo of Morioka City’s Ishiwarizakura tree, which is over 360 years old, in full bloom, it said, “We pray for the earliest possible recovery with this tree full of vitality. Our hearts are always with you.” in Japanese and Chinese. conveyed the message in words.
The message project received sponsorship from 23 municipalities and 32 companies and organizations within the prefecture, mainly those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The paper was also published on the Iwate Nippo website.
Iwate Nippo will continue to provide both material and spiritual support while assessing the situation and needs of the areas affected by the Taiwan East Coast Earthquake.

With the cherry blossoms in full bloom, we hope for a speedy recovery. Everyday life will definitely come back. I think you are living in a state of anxiety right now.
Please support each other with your family and loved ones and get through this. We will never forget the kindness we received from the people of Taiwan in 2011. I will always cherish the friendships I have cultivated with everyone in Hualien.
The Ishiwari cherry tree in Morioka is over 360 years old, and it bloomed beautifully this year as well.
