I started this series because I wanted to write about people who are fooled by false rumors, but before I knew it, I was writing about people who seriously believed in something, rather than people who were fooled. Then I realized that I was more interested in believing than in being deceived.

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1967. Debuted in 1990 with the Kaien New Writer’s Award for “Happy Game”. In 1996, she won the Noma Literary Newcomer’s Award for “UFO in the Slumbering Night.” In 2003, she won the Women’s Publications Award for the Arts for “Floating Garden.” In 2005, she won the Naoki Prize for “Girlfriend on the Other Shore.” In 2006, she won the Yasunari Kawabata Literary Award for “Rock Mother.” 2007. He received the Chuo Kosho Essay Arts Award for “Cicadas on the Eighth Day”, the Ito Sei Literary Award for “Tree House” in 2011, the Shibata Renzaburo Prize for “Paper Moon” in 2012, and the Izumi Kyoka Literary Award for “Kanata no Ko” (2014). He won the Kawai Hayao Monogatari Award in 2007 for “The Girlfriend in Me” and the Yomiuri Literary Award (Research and Translation Award) in 2011 for his translation of “The Tale of Genji” (3 volumes). His books include “Kidnap Tour,” “Kuma-chan,” “Crossing the Sea in a Bamboo Boat,” “The House on the Hill,” “Tarant,” and many other essays.
