(Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Yu Onodera) will publish Volumes 1 and 2 of “The Pillow Book” translated by Junko Sakai from Kawade Bunko on May 8, 2024. This book is a paperback version of the “Makura no Soshi/Hojoki/Tsurezuregusa” volume published in November 2016 as a part of “Natsuki Ikezawa = Personally Edited Complete Works of Japanese Literature.”
“Millow Book” is Japan’s oldest masterpiece collection of essays written by Sei Shonagon, who served Sadako, the middle court of Emperor Ichijo during the mid-Heian period, and wrote about his days at the imperial court. It is the origin of essay literature, full of brilliant writing and humor, and is a masterpiece that will be read for thousands of years, making readers laugh even today with its empathy.

■Translator biography
Junko Sakai
Born in Tokyo in 1966. Essayist. After graduating from Rikkyo University’s Department of Sociology, he worked at an advertising agency before devoting himself to writing. Won the Women’s Public Papers and Arts Award and the Kodansha Essay Award for “The Loser’s Howl.” He has written many books, including “The Olive Trap” and “A Childless Life.”
