The much acclaimed Michielette version of “Camping Cosi” will be making a reappearance at the New National Theater (Shibuya, Tokyo). “Cosi fan tutte” by popular director Michieletto is a “camping cosi” set in a modern campsite. Set to Mozart’s exquisite music, the lovers’ one-night romance unfolds on a realistic stage full of trappings unique to a campsite. “Così fan tutte” is the ultimate ensemble opera starring all six cast members. The duets, trios, quartets…the duets performed one after another are beautiful and can be said to be the pinnacle of Mozart’s work. What lies ahead of Mozert x love adventure… The ending, which is unique to “Camping Cozy,” which resonated with people, is also a big highlight. Enjoy a slightly different version of “Così fan tutte” at Opera Palace.

Mozart’s opera “Così fan tutte (All women are like this)” depicts the truth of love between a man and a woman with exquisite music. It is one of Mozart’s four great operas, along with The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute.
The story of two young men taking on a gamble to test the love of their lovers, and of the women falling into temptation, is told in an ensemble that includes a number of duets, including female duets, male duets, male and female duets, trios, and quartets…・This opera is now popular as Mozart’s best romantic comedy. The collection includes famous songs that convey the subtleties of the heart, including sister Fiordiligi’s “Like a Rock” and “Please forgive me, lover”, Despina’s “When a Woman Turns 15”, and Ferrando’s love song “Beloved”. A beautiful aria such as “The breeze of love is”, the sisters’ “I prefer that chestnut hair”, and the climax where Fiordiligi finally accepts Ferland, “Soon I will be in the arms of my fiancée”, a gem that penetrates your heart. It is a treasure trove of music. Many people say that this is their “favorite of Mozart’s operas,” and it is a fine work that is full of Mozart’s character.

In “Cosi fan tutte,” all six singers play important roles: two couples, Alfonso, the old philosopher who sets up this love game, and Despina, the maid who plays the love guide. It is, so to speak, an ensemble opera in which everyone plays the leading role.
The sisters will be played by sopranos who have played roles such as Lieu in “Turandot,” Oscar in “The Masquerade,” and Michaela in “Carmen” at famous theaters such as Teatro alla Scala, the Royal Opera House, and La Fenice Opera House. Singer Selena Gamberoni and Daniela Pini, a mezzo-soprano who specializes in Mozart and bel canto, also sang the same role in the 2011 premiere of this Miquieretto version. The two young lovers on the other hand are Joel Prieto, a new star tenor who rose to the world from Puerto Rico, and Joel Prieto, who built a career in the United States and has appeared in important roles starting with the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival “Eugene Onegin.” , baritone Uchu Onishi is rapidly increasing in popularity and reputation both at home and abroad. The role of Despina, the maid, is played by the actress, who has received high acclaim for her roles as souvenirs (light and cheerful soprano roles such as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro and Adele in Die Fledermaus), as well as Innold in Pelléas et Mélisande and Ksenia in Boris Godunov. Kanae Kujima is making remarkable progress. The role of philosopher Don Alfonso will be played by Filippo Morace, a talented Basso Buffo from Naples. The conductor is Norichika Iimori, who led the 2020 season opening performance “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to great success.

As soon as the story begins, the characters instantly transform into camp goods, real cars, punk bikers, and playful props and fashion appear one after another on the rotating stage. The unique tastes that are sometimes added to the stage are full of fun, and will tickle the hearts of stage fans. The hustle and bustle of young people, men and women deciding where to pitch their tents, skirmishes over where to pitch their tents, love stories while playing in the water, bonfires in the deep darkness…the campsite is full of fun things that make you think, “There’s camping!” The story of love adventure is full of reality.
What further wows the audience is the ending of “Koji” presented by Michieletto. As the philosopher had expected, the woman changes her mind, and when the scene is captured, she suddenly “wakes up” and returns to the man’s bosom, and there is a grand finale…The ending turns the original story upside down, and many in the audience cried out with joy! Michieletto’s “Camping Cosi,” which continues to resonate, is an entertainment that you should definitely enjoy at the theater with its exquisite music and drama.

After pretending to go to war and performing a fake breakup, the two disguise themselves as different people and woo the sisters. The sisters’ hearts gradually waver, and Dorabella falls for Guglielmo, and Fiordiligi also falls for Ferlando’s advances. Just as the wedding of the two swapped couples is about to take place, it is announced that the military (fiancee) has returned.

About the New National Theater
As Japan’s only national theater for contemporary performing arts, the New National Theater produces and performs opera, ballet, dance, and theater performances, as well as provides training for artists. Kazushi Ohno, a world-renowned conductor, has been appointed as the artistic director of the opera department since September 2018, and he has staged approximately 10 opera performances a year at a level comparable to that of major opera houses around the world, and has also led an opera appreciation class for high school students. We are currently implementing these measures.
