*About the exhibition*
Until now, Katsuhiko Hibino has often attached words to the titles of his solo exhibitions, such as “I want to meet you,” “Message game,” and “Why do people draw?” that explore the physiological impulses that drive his creative activities. Says. This time’s “Even if the brain is damaged, the body cannot be damaged” #01 was created in February 2024 in a room with a mural of Redon in the Abbey of Fontfroide in France, wearing VR goggles and entering a digital virtual space. Based on the experience of drawing, we will once again examine the relationship between the brain’s desire and the body’s pleasure while wearing VR goggles and performing live painting in a real gallery space, together with an audience present in the space at the same time. It’s space.

“Gallery & Restaurant
Behind the Scenes will feature a solo exhibition by Katsuhiko Hibino, a pioneer in Japan’s contemporary art scene who continues to be active in a variety of fields.
Hibino, who studied design at Tokyo University of the Arts in the 1980s, has developed a cross-disciplinary art scene that includes not only two-dimensional works, but also advertising, stage art, and even sports. Hibino’s activities are characterized by his attitude of opening up new forms of expression, focusing on how works of art can relate to actual society.
The keyword for this exhibition is “public production.” Hibino has been active in live painting since the late 1980s. The most appealing aspect of this exhibition is the process of refining the work while interacting and resonating with the audience, rather than staying in an ivory tower. During the exhibition period, a digital live painting event is planned where participants will wear VR goggles. I would like as many people as possible to experience the painting that is unique to “behind the scenes,” a space that deviates from the white cube. *Artist profile*
* Katsuhiko HIbino *

Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1958. He began his career as a writer in the early 1980s when he was a student at Tokyo University of the Arts, and has attracted a lot of attention for expanding his field of expression by fusing social media and art activities. Since then, he has participated in the Sydney Biennale and the Venice Biennale, and has held solo and group exhibitions both domestically and
internationally, as well as a variety of activities that cross disciplines. We also continue to disseminate workshops and art projects that take advantage of the characteristics of local places. Currently, he is the director of the Gifu Prefectural Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Kumamoto, and has been engaged in educational and research activities since 1995 at his alma mater, Tokyo University of the Arts, and has served as the president since 2022. Pursuing further possibilities, we actively collaborate with companies and local governments, and continue to research and put into practice the idea that “art is the power to live.”

Gallery & Restaurant opened in Azabudai Hills Garden Plaza A in November 2023 The backstage space includes a space where you can enjoy drinks and food, creating a space where you’ll want to talk with someone after viewing the artwork. Here, you can share with someone the feelings you have developed as a result of encountering the work, as well as any confusion or perplexity you may have. Although the space is limited at 26 tsubo, if you go around to the back of the exhibition space, you will find a kitchen with a chef, where you can enjoy chilled white wine, casual appetizers, and full-fledged course meals. We sometimes plan performances such as theater and dance, ranging from veteran artists who are included in museum collections to popular artists who are attracting hot attention in the global market.
