[Tokyo/Nihonbashi] The pearl goddess “Toyota Hime” exhibition will be held from June 10th to 16th, the first collaboration between sculptor Ai Sano and Mori Pearl
*PEARL & ART is a fusion of pearls and art. 2024, the Year of the Dragon, features the God of Pearls, who takes the form of a dragon. * Marble sculpture: “New Toyotamahime” / Created by: Ai Sano / Photo: Kenji Agata Mori Pearl Co., Ltd. (Location: 1-12-11 Muromachi, Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director and President: Mori
Katsuyuki) will be holding an event based on Toyotamahime, the god of pearls that appears in Japanese mythology, from June 10th (Monday) to June 16th (Sunday), 2024 at the shop and gallery on the 1st floor of our head office.
Since 2019, the company has collaborated with artists such as Tom Nagai, Gaku Igarashi, and Kaeru Tsukino under the theme of “Pearl & Art.” This time, we will be presenting a three-dimensional sculpture using marble created by Ai Sano.

I want to make Toyotama Hime, the god of pearls, popular, like Cronos, the god of time, and Bacchus, the god of wine. We planned this exhibition with the belief that the god of pearls, a jewel that Japan is proud of, must be a Japanese god. I met Ai Sano on X (old Twitter). You can experience various works from an artistic perspective and the beauty of marble catches your eye. At first, I was mainly thinking about a collaboration between pearls and marble to create the “white beauty,” but after repeated meetings with an artist who specializes in mythical beasts and reptiles, I came across the god of pearls in the form of a dragon. We arrived.
At the venue, we will also have a marble sculpture of Ai Sano’s new work “Toyota Hime” and original silver jewelry that depicts the stone carving (image above).
Additionally, many of Ai Sano’s archived works will be on display. Enjoy the fusion of pearls and art.

A dragon-shaped god of pearls that appears in Japanese mythology. As the child of the sea god Watatsumi-no-Mikoto, she became pregnant with the god of fire, Kaorison, who visited Princess Toyotama while she was living in Ryugu Castle. The story goes that when she gives birth on earth, she is seen in her true form (a dragon), and unable to bear the shame and sadness, she returns to the Dragon Palace. Toyotamahime is also said to be the model for Otohime in the fairy tale “Urashima Taro.” The story has been passed down in the Kyushu region and Mie Prefecture.

2016 Completed the Department of Sculpture, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts
The stone carving “Sakura Wolf” is stored in the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts.
Using the presence of marble’s texture and mass, he brings to fruition invisible things such as dragons, mythical beasts, fantasies, and the spiritual world shared by humans.
In addition, he continues to pursue primitive beauty in the Python series, which thoroughly plays with the potential of marble in color, pattern, and texture.

* About Mori Pearl Shop & Gallery *

It opened on the first floor of the Nihonbashi headquarters building in 2022 as a directly managed Mori Pearl store. The shop and gallery features a gallery to view pearls from multiple perspectives and to strengthen collaboration with art. We are expanding the possibilities of pearls.
In addition to selling new items, we have also started a service called “Shinju Hospital” that serves as a consultation center for pearl maintenance. We have also started purchasing pearls, which was not common until now. I am taking on various challenges.
* 【Company Profile】*

Based on our corporate philosophy of “Creating dreams and joy through the beauty of pearls,” we are a company that has been dealing with pearls for more than half a century since 1964. Until now, we have collected only the best products from all over the country on the stage of department stores and delivered them to consumers. However, from now on, it is natural for the quality to be good. We want everyone to smile. Although Mori Pearl does not culture pearls, we convey the feelings of our creators to our customers, create a life with pearls, and propose new value.
