Food loss reduction initiatives promoted through collaboration between industry, government, and academia have been selected as the Ministry of the Environment’s “mottECO Model Project”
……
The food loss reduction efforts promoted by the MottECO Promotion Consortium, an industry-government-academia alliance in which Seven & i Food Systems Co., Ltd. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) participates, have been recognized by the Ministry of the Environment as part of the FY2020 Food Loss Associated with Food Consumption Behavior Initiative. Selected as a model project for introducing reduction measures. The mottECO Promotion Consortium is an industry-government-academia collaboration alliance that aims to promote food loss reduction and is made up of 21 organizations: 8 restaurant businesses, 8 hotel businesses, 1 ready-made meal business, 2 local governments, and 2 universities.
The project that was selected this time was the “Food Loss Reduction Project through Promoting MottECO through Industry-Government-Academia Collaboration”, which is an unprecedented project in the nation to tackle the social issue of “reducing food loss and food waste” through industry-government-academia collaboration. This is an initiative that takes on the challenge of providing solutions. Industry, government, and academia play the following roles depending on their respective characteristics.
・“Industry”: MottECO introduction and practice by multiple businesses that transcend competitive boundaries
・“Government”: Promoting initiatives in accordance with the messages from related ministries (national) and resolving regional issues (local governments)
・”Academics”: Surveys, research, information provision that are difficult for business operators, and dissemination to Generation Z

mottECO’s initiative is that if a customer wishes to take home food that they cannot finish, we will provide them with a leaflet and a container to ensure safe consumption, and the customer will be asked to take the food home at their own risk. The aim is to create and spread a culture in which people take their own responsibility for leftover food and do not throw it away in the garbage.
In 2021, Seven & i Food Systems announced that in response to the Ministry of the Environment’s announcement of “take home leftovers at your own risk = mottECO,” the company operates Denny’s and Royal Host, a similar business. We have begun working together to introduce and promote its use. After that, we expanded our collaboration, and last year we formed a consortium.
Received the “Reiwa 5th Food Loss Reduction Promotion Award – Minister of the Environment Award.”
Following the selection of this model project, we plan to hold an event sponsored by the MottECO Promotion Consortium this summer, following on from last year, as a dissemination and awareness project that only a MOTTECO practice organization can provide.
