Ai Tominaga experiences pottery at a Kasama ware workshop
When I did pottery with my son, we only made small items, so this time I want to try making large pottery for the first time.”
……
“Ai Tominaga’s Tradition to the Future ~ Weaving Japan’s traditional culture to the future” is broadcast every Wednesday at 10:00 am. On the June 5th broadcast, Ai Tominaga visited a Kasama ware workshop and had a pottery experience. This is my first attempt at making a large pottery, which is difficult for beginners.
This time in this program that introduces traditional culture from all over the country, Ai Tominaga visited Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, the production center of Kasama ware. We will visit the “Otsu Kogama” kiln, which boasts a tradition of over 150 years since its establishment at the end of the Edo period, and ask the fourth generation, Hiroshi Otsu, and his son, the fifth generation, Koichi, about the appeal of “Kasama ware.” According to Otsu, while many traditional crafts are in decline due to problems with successors, the number of applicants for Kasama ware continues to increase every year. There was a perfect system for accepting applicants from all over the country, and a free environment that was not bound by tradition. Kasama ware, which is produced in such a free environment, has a great appeal for its wide variety. Ai Tominaga, who often buys local pottery when she travels around the country, is fascinated by the unique pieces as soon as she visits the workshop. This is my first time visiting Kasama, and I immediately buy my favorite pottery.

Until now, I had only made small items, but this time I tried making large vessels for the first time. “It was difficult because it required a lot of force to turn the potter’s wheel and shape it,” he says. How good is it?

In the second part of the broadcast on June 12th (Wednesday), young artists gather to present their modern and unique works born from free style. And we will discuss the future of Kasama ware. One of them is an artist of “Mashiko ware”, which has been handed down in Mashiko City, Tochigi Prefecture. We will also unravel the relationship between “Kasama ware” and “Mashiko ware”, which are designated as Japanese heritage sites as “Kasamashiko”.
“Ai Tominaga’s Tradition to the Future ~Kasama Ware Edition~” will be broadcast on BS Nippon TV from 10:00 on June 5th and 12th.
