Shiba Park Hotel was founded in 1948 as a foreign trade mission hotel and retains its historic flavor and international charm. We welcome many customers from overseas, and the ratio of foreign visitors to Japan from January to March 2024 reached 91.6%. Against this background, Shiba Park Hotel will newly offer a “Private Simple Kintsugi Experience Exclusively to Guests”. This experience provides customers with the opportunity to learn about traditional Japanese culture and create beautiful Kintsugi artwork with their own hands. Shiba Park Hotel will strive to make your stay an unforgettable memory through this experience. We also hope that this experience will serve as an opportunity to deepen your understanding and interest in traditional Japanese culture.

Features of the private simple Kintsugi experience for guests only: Individual support: You can experience it without any hesitation with private guidance. Professional guidance: Hotel staff who are certified as Kintsugi instructors will provide careful guidance. Language support: Instruction in English allows you to experience the experience without language barriers. *In this experience, we will use brass powder and substitute gold powder instead of gold powder. In addition, modern repair techniques do not use real lacquer, but instead use synthetic lacquer, adhesives, putty, etc.

Flow of the experience 1. [Observation] The experience class begins. You will be asked to observe the characteristics of the ceramic coaster you are repairing. 2. [Joining] Place equal amounts of each of the two adhesives on the work board and mix thoroughly with a wooden spatula. Apply as thin a layer of adhesive as possible to the cracked surface. Connect the glued parts and press firmly. 3. [Sharpening] Use a cutter to remove the protruding adhesive and sharpen the surface of the joint or supplemented area. After roughly carving it with a cutter, we sand it with sandpaper to recreate the shape of the coaster before it broke. 4. [Painting] Once the shape and smooth surface are complete, apply synthetic lacquer to trace the joint marks. At this time, be careful not to apply it too thickly. 5. [Sowing] Sprinkle gold powder evenly on the area painted with vermilion using a brush. Gently smooth the area where the gold powder was sprinkled with cotton wool and let it dry. 6. [Complete] Place the coaster in the special wooden box and it’s complete.

About Shiba Park Hotel Shiba Park Hotel was founded in 1948 as a foreign trade mission hotel. We have walked here on a grassy field with a rich history surrounded by greenery, valuing the traditions and culture of the region. The entire building was renovated from 2020 to 2023 and rebranded as the Library Hotel. Approximately 1,500 books directed by Ginza Tsutaya Shoten are lined up inside the building. There is a restaurant on the 1st floor where you can enjoy Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisine, and 4 banquet halls on the 2nd floor.
