Kakuda City, Miyagi Prefecture and Hochiki Co., Ltd. conclude “Agreement regarding the use of designated emergency evacuation sites in the event of a disaster”

On June 4, 2024, Hochiki Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo / Representative Director, President and Executive Officer: Hajime Hosoi, hereinafter referred to as the “Company”) signed an agreement with Kakuda City, Miyagi Prefecture regarding the use of designated emergency evacuation sites in the event of a disaster. We would like to inform you that we have concluded an agreement.
As a comprehensive disaster prevention manufacturer, we aim to create a society where people can live safely and securely, and we will continue to work even harder to support local residents and contribute to the community during disasters.

* ■About the agreement*
Kakuda City and our Miyagi Office have entered into an agreement to temporarily use the parking lot of our Miyagi Office as a vehicle evacuation site for local residents in the event of a flood.

* ■About the background*

In 2019, Kakuda City suffered severe damage from Typhoon No. 19 (East Japan Typhoon). Record heavy rain occurred, and the area around the Miyagi office was flooded (no damage was caused to the office). The impact on agricultural crops was also significant, with total damage amounting to approximately 7.3 billion yen, the largest ever.

Based on this experience, in July 2020, we installed a waterproof wall over 2 meters at our Miyagi office. Amid increasing requests from the local community for an evacuation site for vehicles in case of floods from the Abukuma River, discussions have been underway with Kakuda City regarding the use of the Miyagi Office, and an agreement has now been reached.

* ■Comments regarding the conclusion of the agreement*
* ▼Nuki Kurosun, Mayor of Kakuda*

In Kakuda City, when a disaster such as a flood occurs or is likely to occur, the parking lot of Hochiki Co., Ltd.’s Miyagi office is used as a temporary evacuation site to provide relief to people in areas where flooding is expected. It will now be possible to secure evacuation areas for vehicles (200 vehicles) as designated emergency evacuation areas by the city.
This is the third time in Kakuda City that a private facility has been designated as a designated emergency evacuation site, and this will further improve the city’s disaster prevention capabilities.

* ▼Hochiki Co., Ltd. Miyagi Office Manager Takashi Yahagi*

During the East Japan Typhoon that occurred in 2019, the Miyagi Office was not damaged, but the surrounding area was flooded. Our company manufactures 100% of its sensors for domestic use at the Miyagi Factory (located within the Miyagi Office), and given the increasing severity and frequency of flood disasters in recent years, there is a high risk of operational shutdowns due to flood damage. We also built a waterproof wall to ensure that operations do not stop. We would be happy if the waterproof wall could be of some help to the local community in an emergency.
