[Mold situation during the rainy season] Over 70% of the places where mold is most worrisome is the bathroom!
*~The key to preventing mold is not to leave any water behind~* *
Linrei Co., Ltd. is a comprehensive manufacturer that develops, manufactures, and sells waxes, coatings, sanitary cleaning products, etc. for home, automobile, and commercial use (Head office location: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Suzuki)
Shinya) conducted a survey on “mold prevention during the rainy season” targeting men and women in their 20s to 60s nationwide. We also asked Mr. Fujita, a mold expert, to give us tips on how to prevent mold regarding the “mold problems” revealed by the survey results. *
* Topics of survey results *
This time, Linrei Co., Ltd. conducted a survey targeting men and women in their 20s to 60s nationwide.
The following was clarified in a survey on “Mold countermeasures during the rainy season.”
■Approximately 70% of respondents said they had suffered from mold during the rainy season.
■Bathroom is the number one place where mold is a concern during the rainy season
■Ventilation is the most common anti-mold measure.
This time, we asked Mr. Fujita, a mold expert at Osaka Public University, to give us some tips on how to prevent mold, regarding the “mold problems” revealed by the survey results.
Kenichi Fujita
Completed doctoral course at Osaka City University, Graduate School of Science. Doctor of Science.
Currently a professor at Osaka Public University, Graduate School of Science. Mold grows not only around water, but also on the human body and food. He continues to search for drugs that suppress mold using
microorganisms and plants, and in recent years has also focused on researching drug-resistant mold.
Cleaning the bathroom is part of the fight against mold, and has now become a hobby.
* Approximately 70% of people answered that they have suffered from mold during the rainy season! *
*What is the problem*
When asked, “Have you ever been bothered by mold during the rainy season?” * “Very much (24.0%)” “Somewhat (42.4%)” “Not very much (23.6%)” * *The answer was “Not at all (10.0%)”*.

Approximately 70% of respondents who answered “very much” and “somewhat” answered that they would like to prevent mold during the rainy season.
It became clear that I was worried.

When asked, “What worries you about mold? (Multiple answers allowed)” * “Cleaning is difficult (70.5%)” *
The most common answer was “Mold grows quickly (59.8%)” and “There is a bad smell (33.9%).”*
Many people find cleaning mold to be difficult and time-consuming. Also, many people are tired of mold that grows quickly even after cleaning and gives off an unpleasant odor.
*The number one place where mold is a concern during the rainy season is the bath*
When asked, “Where are you concerned about mold during the rainy season? (Top 3)”
* “Bathroom (74.5%)”* was the most popular answer, followed by * “Washroom (24.3%),” “Windows/Curtains (22.2%),” and “Washing machine (22.0%).”*
It continued.
The results showed that many people were concerned about mold in water areas such as baths, washrooms, and washing machines. Dirt around windows can also cause mold.
Let’s listen to specific stories of people having trouble with mold. * ■An episode where I had trouble with mold…-Free answers/excerpts-* ・Even if you try to remove mold from your futon or bathroom, mold will appear again after a few days (Female, 30s, Hiroshima Prefecture) ・Black mold has grown on the wall of the room where I hang my laundry to dry, and I can’t get rid of it. (Female, 30s, Miyagi Prefecture) ・When I took out the slightly expensive sandals that I don’t usually wear in my shoe cupboard for the first time in a while, they were moldy and it was difficult to take care of them (60s/Female/Aichi Prefecture)
・Mold grew on my outerwear and shoes that I kept in my closet, so I had to throw them away (Female, 20s, Chiba Prefecture)
The responses we received indicate that mold can grow again even after cleaning, and that many people have difficulty removing mold once it has grown.

* Mr. Fujita’s point: Mold is likely to grow in areas where water does not dry completely! *
Mold requires a “nutrient source, appropriate temperature, and water” to grow.
The most common answers are indoor environments, so the ideal temperature range for mold to grow is between 20℃ and 30℃.
Mold can also grow with even the smallest amount of nutrients leached from the environment.
The most likely place for mold to grow is “places where water accumulates without drying completely.”
Mold often grows on condensation that can be seen on windows and closets, but it is highly likely that mold did not start growing during the rainy season, but rather that mold began to grow slowly during the winter, when condensation is more likely to occur.

Condensation can also form on the flaps and aluminum fins (heat exchangers) of air conditioners due to temperature differences that occur during dehumidification and cooling.
Mold will grow here too if it’s wet. Modern air conditioners have a function to dry out condensation, so please take advantage of it. Shoes can also become a breeding ground for mold if you leave them in the shoe closet without drying them thoroughly. If it stays wet for more than a few days, mold will grow until it becomes visible.

* The most common mold prevention measure is ventilation! *
* At what point do you take measures? *
When asked, “What measures do you take to prevent mold during the rainy season? (Multiple answers allowed),” the most common answer was “ventilation (64.4%),” followed by *
“Use mold remover (38.1%),” “Use dehumidifier/dehumidifier (33.7%),” and “Clean more frequently than usual (23.7%)”* followed.

It has become clear that many people practice ventilation as an easy way to prevent mold.
It has also been shown that many people use mold removers to treat mold that has grown.
Many people seem to be able to remove moisture from the air and prevent the growth of mold by using dehumidifiers and dehumidifiers. Next, when asked, “What do you dislike about mold prevention? (Multiple answers allowed),” the most common answer was * “Mold grows right after you remove it” (53.3%), followed by *
“I can’t get rid of mold (52.2%)” and “I don’t know the correct way to do it (33.6%)” followed.
Especially during the rainy season when the humidity is high, many people may be cleaning mold more frequently. This suggests that people want to know the correct way to take measures against mold.
Next, when asked, “How often does mold grow? (Multiple answers allowed),” the most common answer was “About 2 weeks (24.5%),” followed by *
“About 1 month (23.5%)” and “About 1 week (15.5%)”* followed.

* Professor Fujita’s point: The correct way to prevent mold is to “not leave water behind”*
It is important not to leave any water behind.
When the conditions are right, mold will grow until it becomes visible in a few days to a week.
According to the survey results, many people answered that it takes two weeks for mold to grow, but I think that because the bathroom is cleaned regularly, the time for mold to grow can be extended. Ventilation is effective in reducing room humidity. But that’s not enough; the most important thing is to not leave any water behind. For example, in the bathroom, mold is likely to grow on the rubber gasket. The last person to take a bath can wipe the water around the rubber gasket with a towel to prevent mold, prolong the time it takes for mold to grow, and definitely reduce the frequency of mold removal. Rubber gaskets are particularly susceptible to mold growth, so in order to cut off the nutrient source for mold, it is important to lightly scrub them with a soft brush to avoid scratching them and remove any slight dirt that may have adhered to the surface. If you do this, you can prevent mold from growing for about 1-2 months.

* 60% of bathroom molds are caused by rubber gaskets*
Next, when asked, “Where does mold grow in the bathroom? (Multiple answers allowed)” * “Rubber gaskets (63.8%)” *
Most people answered “Tile joints (45.0%)” and “Walls (31.1%)”*.

Next, we asked them about the challenges they felt in dealing with mold. * ■Please let us know in detail if you have any issues with the mold control measures you are taking*
・It takes time and effort, so the challenge is to make it easy (30s/Female/Miyagi Prefecture)
・Since I can only do it when I have the time, the challenge is whether there is a way to prevent mold that can be done quickly
(30s/Female/Miyagi Prefecture)
・I don’t really like the smell of mold removers, so I would like to find something with less odor (50s/Female/Saitama Prefecture) ・It would be good if there was some kind of countermeasure because the ceiling is dripping and my arms are getting tired (60s/female/Tokyo) Precisely because it is necessary to take preventive measures against mold during the rainy season, there seems to be a demand for mold removers that can easily remove mold.
It was also shown that there are needs for “no dripping” and “low odor.”

* Professor Fujita’s point: How to deal with mold that has grown in the bathroom? *
In surveys, rubber gaskets are the most popular choice.
* ■Rubber packing/tile joint:*
The material is soft and mold roots (hyphae) can penetrate inside. Even if you scrub the surface, mold cannot be completely removed. It is best to use a mold remover effectively to remove it.
* ■Wall: *
If dirt remains on mirror-finished walls, such as those in unit baths, the dirt can become a food source for mold, and water can stick to it, causing mold to grow. However, mold roots do not penetrate walls, so you can remove mold by cleaning without using mold remover.
* ■Ceiling: * The dripping cleaning agent may come into contact with your eyes or skin, so it is sufficient to soak a kitchen paper or cloth with disinfectant alcohol and wipe it.
*Summary: The important thing is to not leave any water behind* The most important thing is not to leave any water behind.
My anti-fungal measures are as follows:
* 1. Ventilation. *
Especially in the case of a bath, ventilate the room for a long time (for example, until the next morning).
Lowering the humidity will help the water dry out more easily. * 2.Do not leave any moisture behind. *
If water stays there for a few days, mold will definitely grow in that area. When taking a bath, especially the rubber gasket, please dry it every day. * 3.Does not leave stains. *
Mold grows using the small amount of dirt that remains, so we recommend that you remove dirt as often as possible.
How was it? Let’s eliminate mold problems this rainy season by referring to the comments of Mr. Fujita, a mold expert!
