◎Introduction
CO methanation technology is attracting attention as a technology that can both reuse CO and serve as a hydrogen carrier by using CO-free hydrogen from renewable energy sources.
In the development of catalysts for synthesizing methane from CO2, there is active development of catalysts that can achieve high conversion rates (90%) over a wide temperature range. Designing reactors with high conversion efficiency generally requires catalyst layers with optimal heat transfer. The active metal and support material of the catalyst are important to obtain high catalytic activity and optimal heat transfer.
Water electrolysis is generally a method of producing hydrogen through electrolysis using renewable electricity.
Alkaline water electrolysis is a method that has been used
commercially in fertilizer production and salt electrolysis for a long time. In terms of scale, we have a track record of large-scale equipment in the 100MW class. Since not only noble metals but also transition metals can be used, there are relatively many materials that can be used. In order to prevent alkali dissolution, nickel is often used for the current collectors of the cathode and anode, and a catalyst is supported on the nickel.
As the cathode catalyst, an alloy system mainly made of nickel or iron is often used, and for the anode catalyst, an oxide or oxyhydroxide mainly made of nickel or cobalt is used.
Due to the strong acidity and high potential of proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis, the materials that can be used as electrode catalysts are limited. Therefore, since noble metals such as Ir and Pt are used, the cost of electrode catalyst materials is high, and research into optimizing the amount of noble metals is active. In recent years, production plans for “green ammonia” produced using renewable energy such as solar and wind power have begun to increase around the world, mainly in Europe. Currently, the green ammonia synthesis process requires research on the process and catalyst from a different perspective than the HB method. In the research and development of ammonia synthesis catalysts, it is important to operate at a lower temperature and lower pressure than the HB method in order to improve low-temperature activity. In addition, the key points are responsiveness to changes in conditions according to fluctuations in the hydrogen supply amount, and the ability to achieve the same level of activity as before shutting down in a short time upon restart. When a catalyst is used in the pyrolysis method, heavy oil and diesel oil are reduced, naphtha and gas are increased, and the decomposition temperature is lowered by 100℃. Zeolite-based catalysts are the mainstream at present. Other materials used include ZSM5 and used FCC catalysts. Each company is focusing on optimizing thermal
decomposition conditions such as decomposition temperature and catalyst, and designing and developing reactors.
This report, “The latest industry report on next-generation catalysts around the world (Part 2)” consists of e-methane, water electrolysis, ammonia, plastic and rare metal recycling, bioplastics, and catalyst informatics. This report is designed to lead to next-generation business with an eye on future developments.
