ARTerrace Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Shusaku Fujino, hereinafter referred to as the Company) is a Japanese traditional culture event held on June 3, 2024 on the large cruise ship “Asuka II” that docked in New York, USA. In response to enthusiastic requests from many participants, we have decided to sell three additional works by Living National Treasure Imaizumi Imaemon the 14th at the event introducing the artist.
Event overview
Seiichi Kondo, former Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, along with two Living National Treasures, Kazumi Murose (Maki-e) and Genjiro Okura (Noh Drum Player), will explore the intersection of performing arts and crafts that have been passed down as part of Japanese culture. Monika Bincsik, curator of Japan at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, provided thought-provoking commentary from her unique perspective.

Kazumi Murose, who took the stage, introduced the history and unchanging charm of Japan’s makie technique, saying, “The technique has not changed at all since makie was completed in the Heian period.” In addition, Genjiro Okura performed using a small drum made about 400 years ago and said, “Nohgaku has survived disasters and wars and has continued for 600 years.I want to continue to convey the goodness of Nohgaku.” I did. Seiichi Kondo, who served as moderator, moved the participants by explaining, “Traditional crafts that incorporate the artist’s passion are clearly different from industrial products.”
As a local voice, Sienna Martz said, “I’m thrilled to be on board the amazing luxury cruise Asuka II.” I listened to a captivating talk by these two national treasures. I was fascinated by the complexity of various crafts such as ceramics, dyeing and weaving, lacquerware, metalwork, and wood and bamboo work.”
Background of additional sales decision
In response to the passionate requests we received from event participants and our deep interest in Japanese culture, we hastily decided to sell three additional works by the 14th generation Imaizumi Imaemon. With this decision, we will provide overseas customers with the opportunity to experience the wonders of Japanese traditional crafts firsthand.
