Realizing replay video distribution and program production using volumetric video technology
Volumetric video technology is a technology that converts an entire space into 3D data from images taken simultaneously by 100 cameras. With free camera work that captures space from all positions and angles, it creates images from viewpoints that cannot be captured with a normal camera, enabling an unprecedented video experience. Taking advantage of Canon’s unique ability to perform everything from shooting to video generation in real time, it is currently being used in a wide range of applications, including sports broadcasts and live music distribution.
The initiative by Canon, Nippon Television, and the Yomiuri Shimbun Tokyo headquarters to broadcast professional baseball using volumetric video technology was implemented for all games in the 2023 season, targeting Yomiuri Giants games held at Tokyo Dome. Achieving innovative baseball broadcasts that would never be possible with a regular camera, such as videos from the player’s perspective that make you feel as if you are inside the field, and highlight videos that stop time at the moment of a fine play and freely rotate up, down, left, and right. Did. Additionally, this season, we have implemented measures that allow viewers to watch powerful live broadcast footage from the perspective of the catcher, first base, etc. using
smartphones or VR goggles.
Encouraged by this award, Canon will continue to develop volumetric video technology and contribute to improving the value of video experiences and the development of broadcasting culture.
