* July 12, 2024 (Friday) to July 15, 2024 (Monday) *

“Scenery Notation” will exhibit Rui Yamagata’s major works created between 2022 and 2024.
Starting with his 2022 graduation series “Scratches on the Earth’s Surface,” he began to develop an interest in map expressions made from satellite images and contemporary landscape paintings, and has since presented works in paintings and videos. Yamagata’s own interest lies in the fact that he exists in the form of coordinates and pixels within the vision realized through remote sensing technology such as satellites and power politics. This interest has led to attempts to reconsider the meaning and experience of being on earth.
In the current situation of invasions, the connection between “acquiring landscapes” and attack and possession is becoming even stronger, and “notation methods” are being developed out of an interest in the body rather than “acquisition methods” (how to draw landscapes). I chose the word. It captures the experiences that occur within an individual, expresses them as traces, and allows others to trace the body that was there.
I hope you will take a look at the part that Yamagata himself has entrusted to his paintings.

This exhibition will display major works created between 2022 and 2024. In 2022, I will be interested in the expression of landscapes drawn from horizontal and vertical perspectives and rotations in ancient manor drawings, and will explore the experience of the body standing on the ground while creating paintings (Google
I created Earth Topology Map / Notation of a fault and Notation of a Fault. In 2023, with the support of the Kuma Foundation, we will trace the changes in surfaces and mediums used to “capture landscapes,” from landscape paintings to satellite maps to drones, and explore our own representations as “pixels” reflected there. “Pixels and Roofs” captured through paintings and video works

Around the same time, he also researched the work of Noriaki Iwahashi (1832-1883), a painter who was engaged in surveying and creating collections of map symbols during the Meiji period. I was interested in the intersection of maps and paintings. For this reason, in 2024, I will be releasing works that attempt to reproduce three types of works: a watercolor work, a collection of map symbols, and a memo paper with a pen tip adjustment.
In this way, it will be a valuable opportunity to summarize the thoughts and experiences of the body that exist on earth that have been accumulated over the past three years, so we hope that you will take a look at it.
