◆Murasaki Shikibu and Lake Biwa In 996, when his father Fujiwara Tametoki was appointed Echizen Province and headed down to Echizen, he took a boat from Otsu, passed along the west coast of Lake Biwa, stayed overnight at Omizo, and then from Shiotsu to Fukasaka Pass. I crossed the road and headed towards Echizen. When he returned to Tokyo alone the following year, it is thought that he took a boat from Shiotsu, took the Koto route via the Okishima Channel, and then traveled by boat from Katata to Otsu. From the poems that Murasaki Shikibu composed during this voyage, we can get a glimpse of the state of Lake Biwa and Murasaki Shikibu’s feelings.
