The Oman Golf Trophy is the world amateur golf tournament that has been held since 2023 as part of the Oman Vision 2040, an economic initiative spearheaded by the Oman government under the leadership of His Majesty the Sultan of Oman, His Majesty Haitham bin Tariq. * -About Oman Golf Trophy-*
The intention behind the decision to hold the Oman Golf Trophy in Japan is to use golf to foster mutual exchange.
Golf in Oman started in the early 1970s. Two simple sand green courses have been established to meet demand among expatriates in the oil and gas industry and local and international defense personnel.
In half a century, golf in Oman has developed greatly and there are now five (soon to be six) world-class lush courses. And in just 50 years, Oman has emerged as a unique and breathtaking golf tourism destination.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman, in collaboration with the Oman Golf Association, supervised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, organized the Oman Golf Trophy (OGT) in Italy in 2022-2023 as part of golf diplomacy.
Although Oman has hosted many international sporting events, OGT was the first Omani-led sporting event held overseas. The inaugural tournament in Italy saw 900 amateur golfers compete on seven prestigious courses in Northern Italy, with 14 elite players competing for the title in Muscat, with one male and one winner being crowned. With the success of the first edition increasing Oman’s status as a leading sports destination, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq decided to expand the second edition to seven countries, with Japan as an additional country.
