SWATCH SISTEM51
SISTEM51 is an automatic (self-winding) mechanical movement made of 51 parts in total. Each part creates 5 different assembled and welded modules. The transparent oscillating weight that controls the automatic winding is held in place by a single screw in the movement. Traditional automatic watches are made up of more than twice that number of parts, with some high-end models having more than 600 parts. These watches are hand-assembled by craftsmen in their workshops, which can take weeks or even months.
SISTEM51 is the first and only mechanical movement produced on a fully automated assembly line. The high-tech escapement has no regulator (the index is not assembled) and the rate, or precision, is set at the factory using laser technology, eliminating the manual rate adjustment normally required in mechanical watches. is not necessary. The movement, with a 90-hour power reserve, is made of German silver and has a rust-resistant design. And all parts are in a sealed case. This means it’s free of moisture, dust, and impurities that could compromise its performance, and it’s durable and maintains high accuracy (-5/+15 seconds per day) over a long period of time. All Swatch timepieces equipped with the SISTEM51 movement are visible from the back. Transparency has been a key element of SISTEM51, which has set Swatch apart from other watches from the beginning. The self-winding movement is powered by an oscillating weight. In the SISTEM51, the weight is shaped like a transparent disc that rotates freely on a single central screw, offering a fascinating view of the movement’s mechanics. Engraving on the surface of the oscillating weight and the five movement modules opens up possibilities for creative expression on the back of the watch and extends Swatch’s 40-year collaboration. It also serves as a foundation for many things. SISTEM51 is the ultimate component that embodies and celebrates the quality of innovation and provocation of Swiss watchmaking, while maintaining tradition and research.
Blancpain FIFTY FATHOMS
Seventy years ago, the iconic Fifty Fathoms watch was born.
Revolutionizing the watch industry as the first true diver’s watch, it was designed by passionate scuba diver Jean-Jacques Fiechtel. At the time, he was also the CEO of Blancpain. A pioneer in the field, which was still in its infancy, he understood how important it was to be able to measure time underwater.
The tools he designed to suit his needs quickly gained support throughout the marine community and became a trusted ally for elite divers and underwater explorers. Over time, it gained critical acclaim, and this diving watch was worn by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his team of divers in films such as The Silent World. This watch was used by the elite diving unit of the U.S. Navy’s special forces, the Navy Seals, as well as the German Navy and French Navy. By improving diving safety, Fifty Fathoms has helped grow the sport and helped people discover the underwater world. 2023 marks exactly 70 years since the birth of Fifty Fathoms, and also marks the rebirth of this iconic model with the introduction of the Fifty Fathoms Tech Gombessa, an innovative commemorative diving watch. Since the 50’s, diving has undergone many immense changes. The biggest change is that divers can stay underwater much longer. While the Fifty Fathoms of 1953 met the needs of Jean-Jacques Fishtel and the veteran divers of the day, the timekeeping needs of today’s technical divers who can stay underwater for hours on end are completely different. Fifty Fathoms meets these needs perfectly.
Fifty Fathoms has played an important role in the development of diving and ocean discovery. It enables Blancpain to have strong ties with the marine community, and these ties have continued to grow over the past 70 years. Exploring the oceans and preserving the environment has always been a top concern for Blancpain. Throughout the history of the Fifty Fathoms diving watch, Blancpain has strengthened its ties with explorers, photographers, scientists and environmentalists who recognize the immense value of these precious resources. This bond enables Blancpain to greatly support important activities and initiatives for the oceans. The Blancpain Ocean Commitment (BOC) program was thus born. Fifty Fathoms is a facilitator of this effort. More details about this release:
