* ■About the background and market environment*
With the end of the coronavirus pandemic and the weakening of the yen, the number of inbound tourists to Japan from overseas has increased significantly. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) (*1), the number of inbound tourists in 2023 has increased by 200% compared to 2022.
. In addition, due to economic instability in Europe, many overseas companies are focusing on the Japanese market and accelerating their expansion into the Japanese market. According to a report by the British Chamber of Commerce (*2), the number of European companies entering the Japanese market will increase by 30% in 2023 compared to the previous year.
.
Furthermore, while Japanese companies have scaled back their PR activities during the coronavirus pandemic, many overseas companies have taken this opportunity to step up their PR efforts towards Japan. A Dentsu study (*3) shows that foreign companies’ PR budgets in Japan increased by an average of 25% between 2020 and 2022.
. Partly as a result of this, overseas companies now account for approximately 70-80% of Shapewin’s customers.
* ■Lecture content*
In this lecture, Sugimoto explained in an easy-to-understand manner to the students what PR is and what kind of activities it involves, using actual examples of PR and marketing measures in Japan for overseas clients that he is in charge of. Examples include a pop-up store held last year to promote French butter as part of a European Union (EU) project, tie-ups with famous French chefs, media events, influencer marketing, digital campaigns, and more. We have introduced PR measures covering a wide range of areas.
At the end of the lecture, the students touched on the challenges and joys of working with overseas clients and took many questions from the students, making it a meaningful time. It appears that the students were able to deepen their knowledge of practical marketing strategies and gain valuable learning that will be useful in their future careers. We hope that through this lecture, more students will become interested in PR and working overseas.

* ■Student reactions and impressions*
“This class was very interesting because I was very interested in SNS marketing.The question that came up was, “What is the difference between PR and advertising?” I had never thought about it before, so I didn’t understand. However, after listening to the class, I was able to think deeply about PR.”

“I was able to listen to stories that I didn’t know if the students, including myself, would be able to experience for the rest of my life, and I thought it would be a good idea to expand my horizons
overseas.Thank you for the new discovery.”

“I had a dream of working overseas and thought it would be cool, so when I saw someone actually doing business with foreign clients, I thought it was really cool.”
