* [Lecture summary] *
Recycling plastics, along with metals, is an urgent issue in realizing the global circular economy, and Japan’s goal is to eliminate simple incineration and landfilling by 2035. There are currently over 8 million tons of discarded plastics, of which polyolefins such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene account for about 70%, so establishing recycling technology for these is a major challenge. In this lecture, we will focus on chemical recycling technology, discuss trends in Japan and abroad, the development status of our catalytic decomposition technology, and explain in detail the technical and social issues to realize plastic recycling. .
