overview
We are pleased to announce the establishment of the “Tokyo
After-School Childcare Association.” This is the first organization created by business operators, whether for-profit or non-profit, public or private, to improve the after-school experience for children.
History of establishment
In Tokyo, the number of children attending after-school day care is steadily increasing, and currently more than 130,000 children are attending after-school day care. In after-school child care, the issue of children on waiting lists tends to get a lot of attention, but an equally important issue that has been overlooked is the quality of after-school child care.
Unlike daycare centers, which are operated according to strict standards, after-school childcare facilities vary in standards and management depending on the management entity, and some facilities are packed with hundreds of children, while others are operated within schools and are The reality is that in some facilities, you don’t know which classrooms you can use until you arrive.
In such facilities, it is difficult for children to try what they want to do or play freely with their friends, and there are situations where children are told, “You can’t do that,” or “You can’t do that.”
After-school childcare is not just a facility where children are kept for the convenience of society or adults, but rather it is a place where after-school activities, which originally belonged to children, are returned to the hands of children, and where children can do what they want. Our association was established by a group of business operators who shared our desire to create an after-school base where students can take on new challenges and spend time with their friends, thinking, “It’s fun!” “I want to go!” .
What our association aims to do
Children can enjoy coming to school, parents can feel safe in their care, and support staff can work with satisfaction and pride. We want to make after-school childcare a place like that.
Specifically, we plan to carry out research and research across businesses and local governments, training to improve the quality of mutual management, and policy recommendations to improve the system. . Ultimately, we would like to go beyond the framework of after-school child care and create a society where children can choose their own after-school time that suits them.
