Last October, reports of a traffic accident involving a Cruise robot taxi in San Francisco went viral, and the news headline “Self-driving business is in retreat” was circulated by domestic media. Is this general understanding correct in light of the current state of autonomous driving technology and business development that is progressing around the world? In this seminar, we will divide the application areas of automated driving into five areas, and will formulate and explain practical application scenarios for automated driving for each application area, including the latest news from businesses that apply to each area.
The premise is to understand the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) “ADS Safety Framework,” and to understand the difference between advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which are mainly operated by humans, and automated driving systems (ADS), which are mainly operated by robots. Recognize the difference. This is a more realistic definition than the “SAE-defined autonomous driving level 1 to 5 classification.” At the same time, NHTSA has released the “Public Highway Collision Investigation Report.” This is a unique public road test to confirm the difference between ADS and ADAS.
The first application area, robot taxis, is attracting the most attention, but it is also the most difficult area. The ability of ADS development companies such as Cruise, Mercedes, Zoox, Apple, WeRide (medium), and DiDi (medium) will be measured from the California DMV’s “Disengagement Report: 2024 Results and 9-Year Trends.” We will explain the “Research Report on the Safety of Autonomous Driving” about Alphabet’s Waymo, the self-driving leader, and explore the true reason for entering the self-driving industry. The second kind of fixed-route autonomous driving, robot buses and robot vans, is rapidly becoming popular in regional cities in the United States. Growth is expected through technological collaboration such as C-V2X. The third robot truck is on the verge of commercialization in the United States. A logistics revolution centered on autonomous driving platforms is underway in the United States, with ADS companies going public, acquiring, and merging one after another. We will introduce the “Robot Truck Technology Report” by Kodiak Robotics, which has also received an order from the U.S. Army for an autonomous driving program. The fourth, Delivery Robots, explains the business
development of major companies such as Amazon and FedEx. There have been many demonstration experiments in Japan, and various opinions have been received regarding the social acceptability of delivery systems that run unmanned on roads and sidewalks. The fifth robot tractor has the lowest hurdle for use on private land.
As a summary, we will make a “forecast of future trends in autonomous driving”. Robotaxis, which are used by many consumers in a wide range of ODDs, require large-scale research and development costs and require laws and traffic rules that are acceptable to a wide range of society. It is predicted that it will take a long time for this application area to become widespread. On the other hand, robot buses and robot vans that operate automatically on fixed routes and are used by specific users with limited ODD are a field with high social needs, coupled with the decline of transportation infrastructure in depopulated areas. Immediate legislation and mass production of corresponding technology are required. In addition, increasing transportation volume and a shortage of drivers are social issues, and robot trucks are one way to resolve these issues. The United States and China are ahead of the curve in this area, and domestic progress is expected to be made in the revision of specific laws and the development of networks.
