The Okayama University Neutron Medical Research Center is a
university-wide center that researches boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT).
We have proven that a drug made from sweet sugar with boron added is effective against pancreatic cancer, which has a poor prognosis. Cancer patients have various preferences, and this study showed that it is important to develop a method to create boron drugs that match cancer preferences based on genetic research.

(Gastrointestinal Dr. Takuya Fujimoto (doctoral student), Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University; Professor Minoru Suzuki, Assistant Professor Natsuko Kondo, Kyoto University Institute for Integrated Nuclear Science; Through joint research with Associate Professor Mizuki Kitamatsu of the Department of Chemistry and Professor Yutaka Takaguchi of the Department of Urban Design, Faculty of Academic Research, University of Toyama, we developed a boron drug that targets intractable pancreatic cancer.
This research result was published online in the biophysical journal “Biomaterials” published by Elsevier on May 9, 2024.
A cancer treatment method called boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) involves administering a boron drug that tends to collect in the cancer, and then irradiating the cancer site with neutrons once the drug has collected in the cancer. This is a treatment that uses neutrons to kill cancer. The key to successful treatment is to season the boron so that the cancer can eat a lot of it.
However, cancers have different tastes, and it is difficult to create a seasoning that all cancers can enjoy. To learn more about cancer’s preferences, we conducted a detailed study of cancer genes and discovered that intractable pancreatic cancer prefers to eat boron drugs tagged with sweet sugar.
BNCT is a cancer treatment method that was born in the United States and developed in Japan. By accumulating these research results, we have not only shown the potential of boron drugs to save many people suffering from pancreatic cancer, but also shown the possibility of controlling cancer preferences. I researched it and showed the steps to create a new drug called a boron drug.
This matter was disclosed at the Okayama University June 2024 Regular Press Conference held at Okayama University on June 25, 2024.

Many times, I traveled from Okayama to the nuclear reactor at the Kyoto University Research Institute for Nuclear Science, which is located near Kansai Airport, to conduct experiments overnight.
