At the Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of Art, we exhibited a large tapestry called “Howl’s Moving Castle (Moving Castle at Dusk)” produced by France’s Aubusson International Tapestry Center. This is a special exhibition coinciding with the “Friday Roadshow and Ghibli Exhibition” Hiroshima exhibition that will open on Saturday, July 13th, and will be the first time the Studio Ghibli tapestry series has landed in Japan (also part of the “Friday Roadshow and Ghibli Exhibition” tour). (Exhibition limited to Hiroshima)
Today, prior to the public opening, an exhibition ceremony was held in the presence of curators from the Aubusson International Tapestry Center and Studio Ghibli personnel. It will be open to the public (free exhibition) from July 2nd (Tuesday), so please take this opportunity to see it.

(C) 2004 Diana Wynne Jones/Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli, NDDMT The tapestry of Aubusson in central France boasts a 600-year tradition and is known for its long history and reliable techniques, including being registered as an intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Aubusson International Tapestry Center, which was established with the aim of preserving and widely disseminating this textile culture, is currently working on a project to weave the imaginary world of Aubusson and Hayao Miyazaki into tapestries. So far, a total of four tapestries have been completed: “Princess Mononoke,” “Spirited Away,” and “Howl’s Moving Castle (2 pieces),” and in the future, “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” and “My Neighbor Totoro” will be produced. Two items will be produced.

It was in 2018 that I was first contacted to create a tapestry. When I looked at the information I received, I decided that it must be a reliable company and could produce something wonderful, so I replied, “I’ll leave it to you to decide how to make it.” Today, I actually saw the tapestry for the first time, and I was really glad that I accepted the offer. Although it is elaborate, it has a warmth that can only be achieved by handmade items, and its large size makes it very impressive.
The worldview of the work is conveyed. I am very happy to be able to see it here in Hiroshima for the first time in Japan.
