The 4th edition of Shimoda Photo Street will be held in the center of Shimoda City from July 3rd to August 31st, 2024. This time, about 70 photos of lifeguards working on the Shimoda coast are on display, with beach culture as the theme. This project aims to revitalize the shopping district, with photographs displayed on the shutters and walls of private houses and old shops lining the street.
This is the fourth time the event has been held, and in the past the theme has been “hydrangea” and “matsuri.”

*About Shimoda Photo Street*
This is the fourth installment of the downtown revitalization project, which is being undertaken by Makoto Aoki of the Shimoda City Regional Revitalization Cooperation Team. Photographs are displayed in Shimoda’s shopping district, known as “Machinaka,” to convey the charm of the area and create the value of a walkable town that can be seen and enjoyed.

*Shimoda City and the history of lifesaving*
Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture is a place that can be called the home of lifesaving. Established in 1978, the Surf Life Saving Association of Japan (SLSAJ) began its activities at Kisami Beach in Shimoda City. It is also one of the birthplaces of lifesaving in Japan.

* Shirahama and life-saving sports *
Photos from the All Japan Lifesaving Championships held in Shirahama, Shimoda City on June 8th and 9th, 2024 are on display. Shirahama is a very important place for life-saving sports in Japan. In 1992, Japan held the only lifesaving world championship, “Rescue
’92” was held here in Shirahama, and had a great influence on the subsequent development of lifesaving activities in Japan.

*Junior Life Saving*
Shimoda Life Saving Club has been engaged in junior life saving since 1990 with the aim of preventing waterside accidents and raising awareness of safety. Targeting young people such as elementary, junior high, and high school students, we provide guidance on sea fitness and first aid, helping them learn how to protect themselves and enjoy the sea safely, thereby helping them avoid future water accidents. We are reducing the risk of accidents and nurturing future lifesavers.
