This is a pitch event that is one of the main contents of “KYOTO”. Komham Co., Ltd. was selected as one of 15 finalists out of more than 300 applications, and won 3rd place in the final on July 5, 2024. * ■Introduction of “smart compost” begins nationwide*
We sell “Smart Compost”, an independent garbage disposal machine that is automatically powered by solar power. When food waste is added, it is automatically stirred, and the microorganism group “Comham*”, which is good at high-speed processing of food waste, stably decomposes the food waste. We will begin delivering aircraft for which orders have already been placed to local governments, companies, schools, etc. nationwide from July 2024.

It is also equipped with a control system to prevent more food waste than the allowable amount from being thrown in, allowing microorganisms to stably decompose food waste in a variety of installation locations. Furthermore, the energy required to drive the device is provided by solar panel power generation, eliminating the need for AC power or water supply and drainage treatment, which reduces initial investment costs and decomposes food waste with virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions. However, proper composting was not being done, and there were many bad odors and pests, so we were looking for a system that could improve the situation.
komham conducted a demonstration experiment in the Shirahama area of ​​Iriomote Island in early 2024 to verify the usefulness of smart composting on remote islands. As the normal decomposition and composting of food waste was confirmed and the sanitary issues were resolved, the decision was made to permanently introduce smart compost to the Funauki area of ​​Iriomote Island.
* [Case 2: Introduction to Ritsumeikan University] *
Ritsumeikan University’s Biwako-Kusatsu Campus conducted a smart compost demonstration experiment in 2022 with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of processing food waste generated on campus. After approximately three months of testing, the final decomposition rate reached over 98%. The decision was made to fully introduce smart composting, as its practicality as an alternative to incineration of food waste has been demonstrated, and its use in education and research, where campuses can be seen as living laboratories.
