Background of the investigation
The “Corporate Planning Department” is an organization unique to Japanese companies.
At Speeda, we have been supporting the decision-making of corporate planning personnel for a long time, and what we have discovered is * The fact is that there is no established practice in the corporate planning department, and each company is groping in the dark and repeating trial and error*.

Because much of the work is highly confidential, the details of the work are rarely communicated in public, and the structure of the organization makes it difficult to accumulate knowledge within the organization, as employees are frequently transferred between divisions. Therefore, the corporate planning department at the workplace is always working on highly difficult tasks without a correct answer or best practice.

Therefore, in Speeda, we would like to clarify as much as possible the actual situation of corporate planning departments, which is not often disclosed to the world, and provide information that will be helpful to as many corporate planning departments as possible in Japan. We are conducting a fact-finding survey.

This year, we investigated the current state of utilization of generative AI, which symbolizes the rapid pace of change in
technology, and the role of the corporate planning department in promoting its use within the company.

The work of corporate planning is wide-ranging, and it can be seen that they are responsible for central management tasks such as “formulation of medium-term management plans,” “single-year budget formulation and progress management,” and “reporting to
management.” On the other hand, I was not able to spend much time on tasks that create the future of business, such as investing in new businesses and startups, and I could see a glimpse of the gap between this and my ideals (see the research report regarding the “ideal of business planning”). The most important outcome indicator for corporate planning was “increase in corporate value,” accounting for over 30% of respondents. In addition, many respondents cited quantitative performance indicators such as “improving profitability” and “increasing sales,” and business planning seems to involve a wide variety of tasks and many qualitative projects. In many cases, results are measured using quantitative outcomes.

Business planners who feel a certain sense of accomplishment toward the goal of “increasing corporate value” spend more time on tasks that create future businesses, such as “launching new businesses,” than the overall average. I also found out that it actually led to certain results.

In addition, we found that the company is actively involved in dialogue with the capital market, such as in “formulating and promoting capital and dividend policies” and “complying with the Corporate Governance Code,” leading to improvements in corporate value.

Many of the respondents cited security issues and issues with determining whether AI answers are correct or incorrect. They seem to feel that it is necessary to use the information in conjunction with third-party opinions and reliable databases.
