WBO world bantamweight champion Yuki Takei and WBA world flyweight champion Yuri Akui Masago give their own commentary on their matches at Tokyo Dome! Broadcast and distributed on WOWOW as “Excite Match SP” on July 8th (Monday)!
WBO world bantamweight champion Yuki Takei and WBA world flyweight champion Masago Yuri Akui attended the recording of WOWOW’s “Excite Match SP”. The two served as commentators on May 6th, the first boxing match to be held at the Tokyo Dome in 34 years, with Takei making his first world challenge against the experienced and versatile Jason Maroney. Akui personally explained his first defense match against Taku Kuwabara, with whom he once fought for the Japanese title. After the recording, we interviewed the two, who said it was their first time commentating on their own matches.

* [Yuki Takei] *
Q. Please tell us your impressions of appearing on this program. “I was nervous at first, but it was my first experience of
commentating on my own game, and I’m glad I had fun doing it.”

Q. Is there anything you felt or realized when you looked back at the match at this time?
“There were a lot of things I could have corrected, things I should have done more in, things I should have done this way, so I think it was good in the sense that I could make use of them next time.I got a little greedy going into the 12th round. In fact, I was just trying to be cool, but I realized that I should have been more calm.”

Q. Please tell us about your relationship with Champion Naoya Inoue, your senior at your gym.
“From my point of view, she is someone who is on a different level, or someone I admire.”

Q. What advice did you receive from champion Naoya Inoue, who has experience fighting Maroney, in preparation for your match against Maroney?
“I was advised that straight punches will land, but hook-type punches from the side, which I’m good at, are a little easier to block, so I kept that in mind, and I think I landed better with a straight punch, as advised, Naoya-san. I’m glad I received advice from you.”

Q.Professional boxing was held at Tokyo Dome for the first time in 34 years. How did you feel fighting in front of 43,000 fans?
“When I entered the venue, everyone’s voices and the scenery were amazing, so it was really awesome, and I felt so energized that I wanted to do it again if the timing was right.”

Q. Please tell us how you felt about the fierce 12-round battle, especially during the final round.
“I thought I would probably lose if it came down to a decision, so I went all the way to defeat him, but I’m glad I won for now.”

Q.Please tell us what it means for the K1 champion to become the boxing champion.
“Although they are different sports, I hope everyone gets excited about martial arts and boxing, and there are so many kids who want to be like me, so I hope I can be one of their goals. There’s still a long way to go, but I think it’s good that we’ve opened up a way to do things like this.”

Q.Who is the opponent you want to fight the most right now?
“I’d like to work with Tenshin Nasukawa, who also came from the same kick group, at some point. I guess if the timing is right.”

Q.What kind of practice are you currently doing?
“I’ve just started training hard for the next match. I’ve started sparring this week, and I’ve been doing a lot of running, so it feels like I’m back to my usual practice.”

Q. In the bantamweight division, all four organizations (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO) have Japanese champions. Please tell us about your future prospects.
“First of all, I’m going to beat Tenshin, other Japanese players, and other world-ranked players, and then I’m going to have a unification match after I get more and more voices saying, “I want to see a match between Yuki Takei and that champion.” If I am asked to have a unification match with another champion next, of course I will take it, but I think the first thing I need to do is increase my value.”

* [Yuri Akui Masago] *
Q. Please tell us your impressions of appearing on this program. “I feel relieved.”

Q. Is there anything you felt or realized when you looked back at the match at this time?
“I watched the match right after the match, and it was exactly as I saw it the first time.Three years ago, when I played with Kuwabara-kun for the first time, I was very thorough, and I was able to put that into practice. ”

Q. (Although it was a short span of 4 months after winning the belt in January) This is your first rematch with Taku Kuwabara since July 2021. How did you prepare for the title match?
“I think it’s probably the first time I’ve played a match in that period since I was the Rookie of the Year, but rather than playing a match a year later, I was able to start in a somewhat better state, so I don’t have to do anything special. Fortunately, he fights in a similar way to my previous opponent, so to be honest, I didn’t have to do much different from him.Also, I’ve played against him before and have some familiarity with him, so I’m pretty familiar with this match. I made the usual adjustments.”

Q. It seemed like you had the upper hand from the beginning in the title match, but which round was the toughest?
“The only time I was in danger was in the first round. After the first round, I was told by the second to use the jab because I didn’t have many jabs, and from there I was able to calmly build up.”

Q. Chairman Moriyasu, what did you say to your wife (manager) before and after the game?
“Before the fight, the team, including the second and trainers, rather than the chairman, discussed strategies, things to be careful of, and punches to aim for.I was told to be careful of the left hook I received in the first round. However, I was able to calmly deal with it after the second round.After the match, the president said, “Well done,” as usual. My wife also worked hard as a manager. I’m quite lazy, so I think there’s a lot to do. I’m not very good at managing schedules, so it was very helpful for me to do that as well. I think my wife was also relieved because there was a lot of pressure in that respect.”

Q.What kind of practice are you currently doing?
“I’m gradually switching back to my usual practice, including gym work.”

Q. There are no champions other than the WBA, but please tell us about your future prospects.
“I honestly don’t know what will happen to other organizations in the future, but as new champions emerge, I hope to aim to become the strongest in the flyweight division.”
