■Environmentally friendly refills reduce CO2 emissions by 48% “Sarasa Clip with Biotube” is a gel ballpoint pen that is
environmentally friendly, including the pen itself, refill, and refill packaging.

We believe that it is necessary for pens to be used for a long time by exchanging refills, and we have developed an environmentally friendly refill called “Bio-Tube.” The refill ink tube uses biomass plastic derived from sugarcane, and absorbs CO2 (carbon dioxide) during the growing process of the plants used as the material. Compared to using conventional environmentally friendly ballpoint pens, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 48% (*1), contributing to the preservation of the global environment.
According to our survey, 64% of people who are concerned about environmental issues say they regularly change refills.

The second edition is the gel ballpoint pen “Sarasa Clip”, which is used by a wide range of people from students to working adults, and has cumulative sales of more than 1 billion units (as of March 2022 Zebra shipments), and is equipped with a biotube. . In addition, “Biotube JF-0.5 Core” can be used by refilling the conventional Sarasa Clip 0.5. Zebra’s environmentally friendly products are now available to more people.
(The conventional Sarasa Clip is sold together.)
■Thoroughly environmentally friendly, even down to the pen body, refill, and refill packaging.
The “Sarasa Clip with Biotube” also uses biomass plastic for the grip of the pen body. Additionally, other parts are made from recycled plastic. Conventional refill packages are made of plastic, but the “Biotube” package is made of paper made from 40% recycled paper. By making the ballpoint pen itself, refill, and refill packaging environmentally friendly, we meet the needs of customers who are conscious of environmental protection. ○ Obtained the “BP (Biomass Plastic) Mark” certification established by the Japan Bioplastics Association.

[Image 11: https://prtimes.jp/i/6581/212/resize/d6581-212-d683f7bc05ab0797b90c-5.jpg&s3=6581-212-e8d94b9f70a589cdc9957110e7c5cf56-3900×3419.jpg] This is a plastic made from renewable organic resources such as plants. Since plants absorb CO2 (carbon dioxide) during the growing process, they have the advantage of not increasing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere even if they are incinerated. This is expected to contribute to preventing global warming and reducing dependence on fossil resources. The Biomass Plastic Mark is a biomass plastic identification labeling system established by the Japan Bioplastics Association (JBPA) that allows use of products that contain more than a certain percentage of biomass plastic and that pass safety screening standards.
The Japanese government is promoting initiatives based on the “Bioeconomy Strategy” and has set a goal to expand the bioeconomy market size from 92 trillion yen to 100 trillion yen both domestically and overseas. (As of June 2024)
■Environmental protection activities promoted by Zebra
Inquiries regarding refills to our customer service center are increasing. Among them, “It’s better for the environment to use refills than pens,” “It’s a waste from an eco-friendly point of view to throw away pens,” and “I wish all pens had refills to reduce the amount of plastic used.” We received many opinions from an
environmentally friendly perspective, such as “”, which shows that environmental awareness is increasing.
Meanwhile, last year Zebra succeeded in developing a product that uses biomass plastic for the core of a ballpoint pen for the first time in the industry. Although there were quality issues with changing the material of the tube that comes into direct contact with the ink, the research team spent four years trying over 70 different materials and succeeded in creating biomass plastic.
In order to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society through writing instruments, our company aims to act in a manner that is considerate of the global environment in all corporate activities, including product manufacturing, and manufactures environmentally friendly products. This time’s “Biotube” will help promote the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions through the product.
