“Memories of a traveler in an era without smartphones”

is a third-generation Yanagiya who left Japan in April 2002, when smartphones were not yet commonplace, and wrote this book about 20 years later, relying on his memories and the diary he kept every day during his travels. A collection of travel essays.

A journey where you can feel the warmth of analog rather than digital, which was possible only because there were no smartphones or SNS, with a touch of absurdity, focusing on episodes that bring a smile to your face, numerous encounters that touch your heart, and adventures that can only be experienced along the way. It is drawn.
This book will move the hearts of those who have traveled, those who are thinking of going on a journey, and those who are a little tired of everyday life.

≪Episode 1≫ (December 2002 Varanasi/India)
“He had a gun pointed at his stomach in an alley, but he was half asleep and reacted foolishly.”
–Right now, I’m 100% thinking, “Why did I do this?” If you have read this, please do not imitate it.
≪Episode 2≫ (July 2002, Luang Prabang/Laos)
“When I greeted them, they made me drink shikotama sake, then they put me on a motorcycle and took me deep into the mountains.”
–Certainly, at that moment, I was feeling the emotion and the real thrill of traveling…in exchange for a big price.
≪Episode 3≫ (August 2002, Luang Namtha/Laos)
“The story of how I suddenly became an English teacher because of one word I said as a prank.”
–Pranks sometimes lead people to unexpected developments. Everyone in moderation…
≪Episode 4≫ (April 2002, Bukit Murta Jam/Malaysia)
“The story of a Yankee who ate a lot of Pringles.”
–It was scary at first. And I learned the importance of sticking to what I learned in kindergarten.
≪Afterword≫
–We have prepared an “unprecedented afterword” that no one has attempted before.

[About the author Yanagiya III]
Born in Kyoto Prefecture. https://www.instagram.com/yanagiya_the_3rd/

He left Japan in April 2002 and began his journey in Thailand, visiting a total of 12 countries in Asia, including Laos, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and returning home in March 2003 after completing a 340-day journey.

He has told stories about his travels in various situations, sometimes orally, and sometimes in writing, but Yanagiya III’s way of talking about his travels is silly yet unique, vividly reproducing the scenes, and creating a sense of realism that makes you feel transported to the place. It is characterized by its friendliness and has a reputation for awakening a new sense of adventure.

The name comes from the name of the store when my grandparents were in business.
