In maintaining a company’s core systems, issues include training and retaining engineers for traditional technologies, relying on experts who are familiar with the company’s systems, and passing on skills. Furthermore, as a result of long-term operation, core systems contain outdated specifications and source code that are no longer in use, which poses challenges when proceeding with system renovation and modernization. Furthermore, Toyota Systems was faced with a tight workload due to a lack of personnel capable of maintaining and renovating COBOL, so there was an urgent need to pass on business application knowledge and know-how and acquire the latest technology. In this demonstration experiment, Toyota Systems formed a generation AI verification team that spans multiple development departments and promoted a demonstration experiment of “code generation” and “specification generation” based on actual development projects. IBM Japan supported this demonstration experiment based on its track record of building and operating large-scale and complex system architectures and promoting IT transformation using advanced technologies including AI. As a result of the demonstration
experiment, we obtained results that contributed to reducing the involvement rate of experts and improving development productivity, and by using the latest technology called generative AI, young employees became interested in legacy languages ​​and actively worked on them. We also confirmed the effects of working on this.
Based on the results of this demonstration experiment, Toyota Systems and IBM Japan will port the expert knowledge generation AI to a large-scale language model (LLM), improve the accuracy of output results through prompt tuning, and use Toyota’s proprietary
development standard format. While proceeding with the output of specifications, we will apply “code generation” from specifications and “specification generation” from source code information to actual business from July 2024, and proceed with consideration of new business processes for application development. I’ll go. In addition, to improve user convenience, we aim to further improve productivity by utilizing an orchestrator that integrates generative AI and other technologies to improve the accuracy of output results. In the future, we will promote further labor savings and automation through the use of generative AI, further promote the modernization of large-scale core systems, and even fundamentally review system development and promote digital transformation, including new ways of developing applications.
