■ Physique and physical strength required for cello players
In order to play the cello accurately, it must be supported by both legs and the chest, and must be stable enough to not shake even when the force of plucking the strings is applied. However, for people who are small or lack confidence in their physical strength, it can be difficult to maintain a good posture.

■ Mechanism and effects of Pesante
“Pesante” is a cello weight invented by a cellist* (*1)*
. By attaching Pesante to the endpin, the center of gravity moves downwards, leading to an improved sense of stability when playing. It has a simple structure that just needs to be fixed to the end pin by hand, making it easy for everyone from beginners to professionals to use.

The weight can be changed to 600g, 900g, or 1,200g* (*2)*, and can be adjusted according to the performer’s physical strength and condition, performance venue, and song title.
[Weight + hook]
The set includes a 600g weight and a 77g hook for attaching to the end pin* (*3)*.
[Additional weight]
300g weight each. There are screws and screw holes on both sides, so you can fix it by hand.
Weight + hook: 677g and 977g by adding 300g of additional weight, which can be further increased to 1.277g* (*4)*.

*1 The name “Pesante” comes from a musical term meaning “heavy” or “profound.” *2 In addition to the weight, the weight of the mounting hook 77g is added. *3 End pin diameter corresponds to φ8mm to 12mm.
(Depending on the combination of end pin material and weight, φ10 mm or more is recommended)
*4 One additional weight is included with the basic set. If installing 2 pieces, additional purchase is required.

▲ Attach two additional weights to make the weight up to 1,277g. ▲ When in use, tighten it by hand to the end pin.

■ Development history of Pesante from developer Yutaka Hayashi chance
At first, we came up with the idea of adding a weight to the end of the endpin to prevent it from slipping when playing the cello. When I tried it out, I found that a secondary effect was that it gave me a sense of stability in my playing style. From now on, we will talk about improving the sense of stability using weights.
Through repeated development and testing, we have discovered that even if the weight is the same, concentrating the weight toward the rear achieves both lightness and stability.
Responses from cellists

As we continued testing with multiple cellists, word of mouth spread about its effectiveness, and the number of people using it for their performances increased. However, there were many problems with the prototype, as it was fixed to the end pin with a hexagonal wrench, so sometimes people forgot the wrench and couldn’t attach it, sometimes they compromised on a portable size even though they wanted it to be heavier, and sometimes they couldn’t unintentionally remove the end pin. It was a constant struggle, as I had to take it out and carry it around.
Toward commercialization

Since we were able to experience the effect of stabilizing musical instruments, a project was launched to improve ease of use and commercialize the product. The current Pesante was created by pursuing solutions to the requests and issues of those who tried it, including ease of removal, variable weight, and a design that blends in with the performers and instruments at concerts.
I hope Pesante helps many cellists.
