New release of “Ceylon Cinnamon Powder” with a focus on scent and safety!

Kaneka Sun Spice Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka, Representative Director: Hiroyuki Okada) has long been highly praised for its elegant and delicate fragrance, and in recent years has been attracting attention due to the publication of various research results. “Ceylon Cinnamon Powder” will be released simultaneously in the EC and commercial markets.

* ■What is Ceylon cinnamon? *
Generally, what is distributed as “cinnamon” is divided into “Ceylon cinnamon” produced in Sri Lanka and “cassia” produced in China, Vietnam, etc. Ceylon cinnamon requires a lot of effort to produce, including the process of carefully peeling off the outer bark, so it is more expensive than cassia, but overseas it is known as “True Cinnamon”.
It is called “Cinnamon (true cinnamon)” and is prized and
distinguished from cassia.

■Domestic distribution status of “Cinnamon”
According to the Ministry of Finance’s import statistics*, 96% of the cinnamon imported into Japan is “cassia” imported from China and Vietnam, and 4% is “Ceylon cinnamon” imported from Sri Lanka, and the import price is also high. , Ceylon cinnamon has 2.5 to 3.0 times the amount of cassia. *
The rare Ceylon Cinnamon is hardly distributed for commercial use, and is thought to be mainly distributed at retail, and is so popular that it dominates the top spice sales rankings on e-commerce, especially in the winter. Consumers who habitually eat Ceylon cinnamon with tea, bananas, yogurt, etc. place importance on safety and security, so they tend to choose organic JAS-certified products.
*All 2023 “Cinnamon bark and cinnamon tree flowers”
■There are different grades of “Ceylon cinnamon powder”
Earlier, I mentioned that Ceylon cinnamon powder is made by carefully peeling the outer bark, but this outer bark is also sold as a cheap raw material, and even in Japan, the import price is lower than the import price according to the Ministry of Finance statistics mentioned earlier. It is estimated that a considerable amount of this is powder made entirely or partially from the outer bark. The outer bark is the exposed old cells and has been exposed to the wind and rain for many years, so it has a lower fragrance than the inner bark.
Even in international trade, cinnamon powder made from 100% inner bark is about 2.0 times more expensive than cinnamon powder made from 100% outer bark.

Based on the above survey results, we believe that we want to provide authentic spices that are highly valued around the world, so even among the expensive Ceylon cinnamon powder, we only use the inner bark, which has an elegant and delicate scent, for a limited time. We will also be releasing organic JAS-certified Ceylon cinnamon powder, which is in high demand among consumers.
