On July 3, 2024, Poplar Publishing Co., Ltd. entered into a
collaboration agreement with the Yokohama City Board of Education to enhance reading opportunities for children. Yomokka!, an
all-you-can-read electronic library provided by Poplar Inc. through MottoSokka!, a book and learning platform for elementary and junior high schools, will be available starting July 2024 at 9 elementary and junior high schools in Yokohama City. This will be introduced on a trial basis to improve the school library. The trial introduction of “Yomokka!” in Yokohama City is mainly aimed at “oversized schools” with 31 or more classes, and “School library space is limited to accommodate the rapidly increasing number of students.” Regarding children’s opportunities to read, such as “We want to teach reading and research classes, but because there are so many classes, it is difficult for each class to use the school library.” This is an initiative aimed at solving problems.

[Point 1] School library collection will increase! ・It can meet the diverse interests of children who want to read a variety of books. ・Since it does not require bookshelf space, you can expand your book collection without being subject to physical constraints.
[Point 2] Multiple people can read the same book at the same time! It can be used in classes, etc. more widely! ・Each student can read books in places other than the school library by using one device. ・The whole class can read the same book and share their impressions, or it can be used during morning reading time or research study. [Point 3] 】Ensuring reading opportunities for diverse children! (Barrier-free reading) ・You can change the font size, color, and background color for some e-books, and you can also enlarge encyclopedias. ・There is a read-aloud function that allows you to listen to the content aloud. Regarding the collaboration agreement between the Yokohama City Board of Education and Poplar Inc.
With the aim of promoting reading activities in Yokohama City Schools and verifying and improving the effectiveness of these services, Yokohama City Board of Education and Poplar Co., Ltd. have concluded a collaboration agreement with the following details. ◇Name of the agreement: “Cooperation Agreement on Children’s Reading Activity Support between the Yokohama City Board of Education and Poplar Inc.” ◇Agreement Signing Ceremony On Wednesday, July 3, 2020, at Yokohama City Hall, the Yokohama City Board of Education and Poplar Inc. The agreement signing ceremony was held in the presence of Hiroki Kato, President and Representative Director of Poplar Inc., and Mr. Yasuharu Shimoda, Superintendent of the Yokohama City Board of Education. ◇Contents of cooperation/agreements (1) Issuance of e-book service accounts to students and faculty at target schools (2) Provision of free use of e-book services to students and faculty at target schools (3) Utilization of e-book services (4) Provide training to the teachers and staff of the target schools necessary for the development of an all-you-can-read digital library by providing feedback on the use of e-book services from students and teachers at the target schools, sharing results and issues, and making improvements through the conclusion of this agreement. Accounts will be issued to approximately 10,000 students and staff at nine elementary and junior high schools where “Yomokka!” will be introduced on a trial basis, and 38 companies and more than 4,300 books will be published on “Yomokka!” (as of July 2024) ) allows you to access e-books in a variety of genres. From July 2024 onwards, we will work together to improve reading opportunities for children, including providing training to teachers and staff at target schools and sharing results and challenges related to the use of “Yomokka!” .
Comments from stakeholders regarding the conclusion of this agreement Mr. Yasuharu Shimoda, Superintendent of Yokohama City Board of Education Yokohama City values “intellectual exchange” among children, and values nurturing children through “books”, not just at school. When we talked about introducing “Yomokka!”, the children were very happy and there was a great response. We would like to use this agreement as a stepping stone to take steps towards cooperation. Initiatives based on the agreement will increase the number of books in school libraries and lead to an enriched reading environment for children. Furthermore, since this time it is an e-book, it is also significant in that it allows children to open up a new way of reading and experience a new way of reading. I hope that this collaboration agreement will be a start for us to have an impact on other cities, and I hope that this will lead to great results. Hiroki Kato, President and CEO of Poplar Co., Ltd. Poplar Co., Ltd. started out as a children’s book publisher, and for over 70 years has been producing books that children can pick up on their own, such as the “Kaiketsu Zorori” series and the “Zukkoke Sanjingumi” series. I am putting effort into making it. Up until now, we have provided “reading” in the form of “books,” but from now on, we would like to view reading in a broader sense and provide a “reading experience.” A book is not just about turning the cover and reading it. Children’s world expands as they encounter books, recommend them to others after reading them, and have discussions with friends. “Yomokka!” has great potential in creating this kind of “reading experience.” This collaboration agreement with Yokohama City will be a great experience and asset for us. I have high hopes for updating and creating Yomokka! with the children of Yokohama City.
