[Recommended by Professor Shinya Yamanaka! ] A story of a major reversal told by a world-renowned scientist himself. “Breakthrough: The Autobiography of Nobel Prize-winning Scientist Catalin Carrico” will be released on July 12th.
*The first definitive autobiography by Catalin Carrico, who was the driving force behind the development of the new coronavirus vaccine and won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine! *
* Kawade Shobo Shinsha Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Yu Onodera) is publishing “Breakthrough: The Autobiography of Nobel Prize-winning Scientist Katalin Carrico” by Katalin Carrico.*
The Japanese version of (original title = Breaking Through: My Life in Science)* will be published on July 12, 2024. *
* ■A moving story *
The mRNA vaccine that saved the world from the coronavirus pandemic. The genetic material “m” that forms the basis of its development Catalin Carrico, who has been researching RNA (messenger RNA) for many years, writes about his life.
A girl born in communist Hungary becomes a scientist, marries and gives birth, and then moves to the United States to continue her research. Despite suffering many unfair treatment during this time, Mr. Carrico was able to continue his research for more than 40 years. Mr. Carrico will write about the steps he took to achieve what seemed like an impossible breakthrough, including the bonds he built with his family and friends who supported him.
Fear of being deported, pressure to obtain funding, lack of
understanding of research results, risk of being expelled from the university…
Then, just as I was starting my new career, a once-in-a-century global pandemic struck.
The story of a great reversal in which a person overcomes one hardship after another and achieves a historic feat is sure to touch the hearts of many readers.
* ■Message that gives courage *
Mr. Carrico’s mRNA research is expected to have a variety of future applications, not just for the new coronavirus vaccine, and this book provides an easy-to-understand explanation of the research content. The descriptions of the research and experiments that led to the breakthrough are thrilling, and seem to convey the anticipation and excitement of a major discovery.
Additionally, topics that are major issues in Japan often appear, such as the crisis in basic research, obtaining research funds, and supporting female researchers.
It also contains many words that can be discovered and learned not only about science, but also for everyone.
・How did you find what you like?
・She describes herself as an “ordinary student,” so what kind of efforts did she make?
・Why were you able to continue your research despite numerous adversities? ・What should I do to get new ideas?
・As a female researcher, what do I appeal to society? ……
This is a powerful message that will give courage to those who are striving toward their dreams, those who are still searching for their dreams, and those who support them.

* ■Author introduction *
*Katalin Karikó*
Born in 1955. A biochemist from Hungary. Specially appointed professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Advisor to BioNTech in Germany. After 40 years of research, in collaboration with American
immunologist Drew Weissman, we have developed a technology to apply mRNA, a substance that conveys genetic information, to medical treatment. He contributed to the development of Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccines.
In recognition of his achievements, he has received numerous scientific awards, including the Lasker Prize in the United States (2021), the Keio Medical Prize in Japan (2021), and the Japan International Prize (2022). In 2023, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Weissmann.
