[Today’s highlights of “JT Pro Official Match”]
Inaba 8-dan advances to semi-finals with surprising strategy The furikoma is played by a person chosen by lottery from among the visitors, and with four gold pieces, it is decided that Inaba 8-dan will be the first mover. Inaba 8-dan made a ▲ 1 Rokuhi from a single thrust, leading to an unusual battle with an early exchange of rooks. After that, they hit each other with their rooks and it turned into an aerial battle. After exchanging rooks several times, Inaba 8-dan took the lead from the 75th move, ▲2 Ichihi. Nagase 9-dan fought back with his characteristic tenacity, and there was a moment when his rating reversed, but in the end Inaba 8-dan won the melee and was the first to advance to the semi-finals.

Kudan Nagase: “This is the first match of this year’s JT Pro Official Match, so there are some things you won’t know until you try it.It’s a public match, which is a different environment than usual, so there’s a sense of tension, and the time is short, so there’s a lot of explosiveness. Determination is required. Inaba 8-dan (who won the first round) is doing well. I will do my best to make it enjoyable for everyone.”
Inaba, 8-dan: “The JT Pro Official Match is a tough game to participate in. I hope you can feel the realism of a public match.” (When asked about his victory over Takumi Ito in the first round) I had a strong opponent in the first round, but Nagase 9-dan is also a strong opponent. In fact, there are only strong opponents in this shogi match (lol).I want to do my best to show my ability.”

[Comment from winning player Inaba 8-dan]
Today’s strategy was something I had planned to do when it was my turn to go first. I’ve mentioned before that Ishida’s style of shogi is to go beyond the 1 spot on the last move and start with ▲1 and 4 hits. It was quite a while ago. There was a bit of an air battle in the middle, but I was guiding them so it was easy. The 75th move, ▲2 Ichihi, is a move that would be fine if this move was okay, but Nagase 9-dan pointed at him in a disgusting way, and he might have been reversed midway through. I think we were able to stay on track even though it looked like it was going to turn into a bad trend. The next match will be in Osaka. I think the people who support me will come to see it, so I would like to point out some good shogi.

[Comment]
It was a strategy that Inaba 8-dan had prepared. The first move was ▲16 steps – ▲15 steps – ▲96 steps, so I thought maybe it was possible, but I couldn’t say it clearly in front of the audience. We exchanged rooks and hit each other again, and in the middle it became a game of shogi similar to an old-fashioned aerial battle. 75th move ▲ 2 Ichihi was a tough move, and Inaba 8-dan gained the upper hand. However, Nagase’s tenacity is amazing. On the 118th move, △3 steps, I couldn’t see the second move for a moment, and I think the first move also felt unpleasant. ▲There may have been some deciding factor, like 3 Goka, but we don’t have time. I think we won well. It was an interesting game of shogi.
