After 120 days of filming, Director Zhang Tsai talks about his thoughts on the film! Authentic Chinese historical drama “Kangxi Emperor: The King Who Ruled the Great River” DVD-BOX3 released! (C) 2022 China Huace Global Media Co., Ltd.
DVD-BOX 3 of the Chinese historical drama “Kangxi Emperor: King Who Ruled the Great River”, which depicts the exploits of Emperor Kangxi, considered one of the greatest emperors of all time, has finally been released. To commemorate this release, an interview with director Zhang Tong has been released.
* -What made you decide to create this work? -*
I created this work after coming into contact with a certain historical material. This is a will written by Jinfu to Emperor Kangxi. In his will, he did not talk about his own life, nor did he make any requests for the family he left behind.
There, he was filled with memories of Chen Pe, who fought alongside him in flood control. What struck me most was, “Since Chen Wei died while being accused of a crime he was innocent of, unless we can prove his innocence, we cannot face his soul.” I don’t want to be the kind of person who would betray my best friend.” This suicide note overflows with so much of their friendship that it is impossible to read it without crying.
I developed the idea for a drama based on this suicide note, and wanted to recreate their lifelong friendship and the great things they accomplished. Thirty years after their death, people built a temple on the Yellow River and hailed them as the gods of the Yellow River. Since ancient times, in China, people who are intelligent and honest, and who dedicate their lives to the country without worrying about their own profit or loss, have been referred to as “gods.” I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that they deserve to be called the “guardians of the Chinese nation.” They are our pride and this dedication will serve as a mirror for future generations. This was the initial purpose of creating this work, and it is also the final purpose.
* -I heard that the film is based on historical fact, but how long did it take from the start of filming to completion? -*
Rather than being based on historical facts, I focused on the main character’s beliefs.
Not all history is correct. However, nearly 400 years later, statues of the two main characters still exist in large numbers along the Yellow River, showing how much respect future generations have paid them.
Both of them had been thwarted by all kinds of false rumors and ambitious people during their lives, but in the end, the
misunderstanding was cleared up and their innocence was proven. This is my understanding of history.
The total filming time for the entire episode is 120 days. The project covered a wide area, from the southernmost point of Zhejiang to the northernmost point of Inner Mongolia and Qinghai, and lasted from summer to spring of the following year.

This work is a masterpiece based on historical facts about flood control in ancient China. In particular, the Yellow River flooding scene was filmed over five days, even though the scene was only one minute long, in order to realistically express the power and destructive power of the “Yellow Dragon” and the battle between humans and nature. You can feel the strong feelings towards him.

-Synopsis-
In the 15th year of the Kangxi era, the Emperor (Luo Jing)’s wishes were in vain due to continuous rains, and the Yellow River flooded, causing extensive damage. Huang Chi-chung, an Anhui cruiser who was at the forefront of protecting the embankment, is held responsible, captured, and transported to the capital. On the way there, he meets Chen Pei (Yin Fan), who had come to Tokyo to take the imperial examination with his friends, and Seisuke informs the imperial court of the existence of a talented young man named Chen Pei.
Kangxi, who was focusing on the “pacification of the three clans,” “water transport,” and “flood control of the Yellow River,” appointed the upright and honest Yosuke as the governor of the river, and although he failed the imperial examination, he was a reliable figure in flood control. Appoint Chen Pei, who is knowledgeable and passionate, to the staff. Despite being at the mercy of fraud, corruption, and profit-seeking officials, Yingfu and Chen Pei take on the challenge of major construction work aimed at stabilizing the Yellow River.
