BlackBerry releases Global Threat Intelligence Report for Q1 2024 Japan ranks 2nd in the world in number of thwarted cyber attacks and 3rd in number of new malware detected

Tsutomu (BlackBerry) today announced the latest edition of its Global Threat Intelligence Report for the first quarter of 2024 (January to March). According to this report, 630,000 malicious hash values (*1) were detected by BlackBerry in the first quarter, an increase of 40% compared to the previous reporting period (Q4 2023). Of the attacks targeting various industries, 60% targeted critical infrastructure such as government, healthcare, finance, and communications, and 40% of these targeted the financial sector.
Of note is BlackBerry’s Cylance(R)
BlackBerry’s predictive AI models and world-class threat intelligence team ranked Japan second in the world after the United States in the total number of attacks stopped by organizations using AI
cybersecurity solutions. Additionally, Japan ranks third in the world in terms of the number of new malware detected, after the United States and South Korea. In the APAC (Asia/Pacific) region as a whole, Japan, South Korea, and Australia are frequently attacked, and all rank among the top five countries in the world rankings.
*1: Hash value is a numerical value used for file verification during malware analysis. The above sentence indicates that 630,000 unique malicious files were detected.
Masaki Kasuya, Chief Threat Analysis Researcher at BlackBerry Japan Inc., said: “Japan’s threat landscape is becoming increasingly complex and concerning. According to BlackBerry’s latest threat report, Japan ranks second in the world for thwarted cyberattacks and detects new malware. Japan’s consistent ranking in the first quarter, and the increase in new malware, have been a major threat to cybercriminals in recent months. In 2024, elections are being held in more than 50 countries.
With geopolitical tensions at an all-time high, this threat landscape can feel overwhelming and difficult to navigate. This report provides a snapshot of where threat actors are focusing, how they are acting, and what to expect in the coming months.”
*Report highlights:*
–
Japan became the second most attacked country in the world after the United States. In terms of the number of new malware detected, it ranks third in the world after the United States and South Korea. Looking at the APAC (Asia/Pacific) region as a whole, Japan, South Korea, and Australia are among the top five countries in the world with high levels of attacks.
– 40% increase in new malware-based attacks per minute: BlackBerry sees a 40% increase in new hashes (unique malware) per minute compared to the previous reporting period I did. That’s an average of 7,500 malware samples per day, or 5.2 per minute for BlackBerry customers [CS1]
It means that you are targeting.
–
Threats targeting commercial enterprises are slowly but surely increasing: Threats targeting commercial enterprises (retail, manufacturing, automotive, professional services, etc.) accounted for 36% of the total, an increase of 3% from the previous reporting period. This has increased. On the other hand, the number of new types of malware has skyrocketed by 10%. Commercial businesses continue to be targeted as threat actors become more sophisticated, often using social engineering to obtain account credentials and distribute malware. Masu.
– CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and
Exposures (Common Vulnerability Identifiers) are rapidly becoming weaponized in all forms of malware, especially ransomware and infostealers: CVE is a framework for identifying, assessing, and disclosing known security vulnerabilities and breaches. We offer Of the 8,900 CVEs reported during this first quarter, 56% received a severity score of 7.0 out of 10.0. This is an increase of 3% from the previous reporting period.
– Ransomware groups wreaking havoc despite being exposed: Globally, the top three ransomware groups active in the first quarter were LockBit and Hunters.
International, and 8Base.
These threats will continue to be influenced by global political tensions, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East, and state-sponsored cyber threats such as North Korea. Disinformation campaigns and sophisticated attacks in the APAC region remain a significant concern for countries like Japan.
BlackBerry Threat Intelligence & Research Team
Based on our data analysis, we predict that threat actors will continue to use a wide range of methods to carefully target their victims. The proliferation of new ransomware and infostealers suggests that personal data will continue to be targeted by threats, with sectors such as healthcare and financial services becoming prime targets for attacks. In the face of rapidly evolving threats and a complex geopolitical landscape, we need to increase our cyber resilience. Japanese organizations relying on signature-based antivirus software and looking to augment their IT teams are strengthening their security strategies with managed detection and response (MDR), as well as solutions and support powered by AI and machine learning. I have to go.
