Higoshimabara Dotanuki Dochu – A trajectory that runs through the sea – We will carry out a four-kan collaboration project
* Four Museums Collaboration Project “Higo Shimabara Dotanuki Dochu – A Trajectory Through the Sea” *
Shimada Museum of Art (Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture), Kumamoto Museum (Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture), Tamana City Museum of History Kokoro Pier (Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture), and Shimabara Castle (Shimabara City, Nagasaki Prefecture) will each introduce Tanuki at the same time. A special exhibition will be held.
As a first attempt, we have decided to conduct a collaborative project where you can tour the four museums listed above.
“Dodanuki” is a group of swordsmiths that was born at the end of the Sengoku period as a group of “Enju” who were active under the Higo Kikuchi clan. The first generation Masakuni worked under Kiyomasa Kato, and his solid and strong swords later earned him the nickname “Kabutowari Masakuni” throughout the world. With the arrival of the Edo period, a time of peace, the school also went into decline, but thanks to the efforts of the 9th generation head Masakatsu* and his son Munehiro, it was revived as a representative swordsmith of the new sword era. I accomplished that.
The names of the places where Masakuni and his craftsmen worked hard to create, Kumamoto Castle and the castle town of Kumamoto, which contain many of the pieces, and Munehiro, a craftsman who learned from Munehiro, a leading figure in the restoration of Dotanuki. Please take a look at the works of the craftsmen who remain in Dotanuki’s hometown of Shimabara.
