Electric Power Sharing Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President: Naoki Sakai) has voluntarily implemented daytime DR (demand response) as part of the new national movement “Deco-katsu” that aims to realize a decarbonized society. We have been commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment to carry out a number of nudge
demonstration experiments aimed at social implementation through the creation of virtual power plants (VPPs).
“Deco-katsu” is a new national movement aimed at realizing a decarbonized society promoted by the Ministry of the Environment.
As part of this effort, we conducted a one-month social demonstration experiment from July 1 to 31, 2024, with the cooperation of Goto Citizen Electric Power Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture).
This applies to electricity consumers who use Goto Denki provided by the company, and if the amount of electricity used between 12 noon and 1:00 pm is higher than the amount of electricity used between 11 and 12 noon immediately before. This was done as part of the “Summer Benefits! Campaign,” in which electricity charges at 1:00 p.m. are waived.
In Japan, solar power generation accounts for the majority of renewable energy, and while there is a shortage of renewable energy electricity at night, during the daytime on clear skies, the supply of electricity exceeds demand, and as a result, the output of solar power plants is halted. “Output adjustment” has become a serious social problem.
Therefore, in order to make effective use of renewable energy, it is important to encourage daytime power consumption (including a time shift from nighttime) and daytime DR (demand response).
For this reason, electricity retail companies across the country are working on initiatives such as offering electricity rate menus that lower electricity rates to a certain extent during daytime hours and giving points, but as the monetary incentive is small, it is not always possible to We are currently in a situation where we are not achieving the desired results.
In addition, there was no technology to quantitatively visualize that “shifting electricity to daytime hours when renewable energy is more available will reduce CO2 emissions (increase eco-consumption),” making it difficult to gain consumer understanding. did.
Therefore, we have introduced an unprecedented electricity rate menu that says, “If you do daytime DR, your electricity bill for that time period will be waived,” and we have also used Denryoku Sharing Co., Ltd.’s proprietary patented technology. A society that encourages consumers to change their behavior voluntarily by appealing to consumers that they can reduce CO2 by shifting their consumption to daytime (increasing the consumer’s eco-friendliness (decreasing the average consumer CO2 emission coefficient)). This is a demonstration experiment conducted.
Based on the knowledge gained from this experiment, Denryoku Sharing Co., Ltd. has developed a highly cost-efficient business model that combines a bold electricity price menu and the DS nudge model that we have built, and has expanded the electricity retail business widely. By horizontally disseminating this know-how to people in the area, we will continue to promote efforts to enable citizens to voluntarily conduct daytime DR and achieve simultaneous equalization of local renewable energy supply and demand.
