The sea that welcomed the West
Leisure that expands
Leisure – Kikka –
Hirado has always been an open door, welcoming people from other countries from across the sea.
This small castle town in the northwestern part of Nagasaki has a strange fate as the place where continental and island cultures quickly met.
Dutch trading posts, Western confectionery shops, and Catholic churches are located right next to traditional Japanese temples and tea rooms.
The rare scenery that can’t be seen anywhere else conveys the history of Hirado.
Outside the town, there is a sea where whales and flying fish swim, beautiful rice terraces that have been selected as a World Heritage Site, and a village of Kakure Christians.
A coastline with views of the ocean and sunset from the farthest west, and Hirado beef raised on grasslands where the sea breeze carries rich minerals.
The climate that was nurtured in the generous nature is still alive today.
Hiromu Matsura was one of the people who loved Hirado all his life and built the foundation of its culture. While saving finances as the 10th lord of the Hirado domain,
He was a master of Noh theater, wrote essays, and compiled a book called “Hyakka no Zu,” which vividly describes Japanese and Western sweets for the people. He was a man of culture.
Kikka is a small hotel with only 5 rooms that was built next to Umegayatsu Kairakuen, the garden of which was designed by Akiko Matsuura.
The sea of Hirado once served as a key point for trade and welcomed many people along with Western culture.
Gaze out at the scenery reflected by the sea through the frame-like windows that face the sea from the guest rooms, restaurants, and saunas, and slowly open your mind and sensibilities while experiencing the history, culture, nature, and food that Hirado has connected. We hope that you can enjoy your leisure time.

The villa of the Matsuura feudal lord once existed in this location. I wanted to capture the beautiful scenery of Hirado that the feudal lord saw and loved at the time, like a painting. A large picture frame is placed next to the window in each guest room, creating a relaxing space. It is a place where you can enjoy your leisure time while looking out at the beautiful sea, in a setting where Japan and the West intertwine. Through this picture frame, guests of this hotel will be captured along with the scenery of Hirado, which has remained unchanged for hundreds of years, and become part of the scenery. Tatsuro Sasaki
