At the Yao City Cultural Center Prism Hall (designated manager: Yao City Cultural Promotion Corporation), performances and exhibition events are held not only on the stage of the Yao City Cultural Center but also in various places such as common spaces, creating a lively atmosphere. We are developing the “Prism Art & Theater Project” with the aim of creating interaction with people. As part of this project, an exhibition on the theme of “Kawachi Momen,” which is attracting attention as a craft originating from Yao, will be held in cooperation with the local NPO Kawachi Cotton Aizome Preservation Society. 320 years ago, in the Edo period, in 1704, after the construction of the Yamato River (the main stream of the first-class water system that flows through Nara and Osaka prefectures and empties into Osaka Bay), the site of the old river was used for cotton cultivation. Yao and nearby areas became one of the country’s leading cotton producing areas. As cotton production became more popular, white cotton and striped cotton began to be woven, and were called “Kawachi cotton.” The Kawachi cotton industry was a major industry in what is now Yao City, Osaka Prefecture, until the end of the Meiji period.
Noriko Muranishi, the first director of the NPO Kawachi Cotton Indigo Dyeing Preservation Society, discovered patterned indigo dyeing on Kawachi cotton in 1976 and has devoted half her life to researching and restoring it. Thanks to Mr. Muranishi’s achievements, Kawachi Momen’s patterns are once again attracting attention as a craft that Yao is proud of.
In this exhibition, we will be showing a part of Muranishi’s valuable indigo dyeing collection held by the preservation society. abroad The blue color created by indigo dyeing is praised as “Japan Blue.” Please enjoy the variety of colors and patterns that are different depending on the dyed item.
