-Overall-Actual state of poor health among young people (18-34 years old) The daily concerns of young people are “work/study,” “health/physical condition,” and “beauty.”
A survey on the mental and physical health of young people was conducted with 864 young people aged 18 to 34 (423 men and 441 women). When asked what they usually worry about, the answers were
“work/study” (60.6%), “health/physical condition” (53.0%), and “beauty” (40.7%). By gender, for men, “work/study” (66.4%),
“health/physical condition” (47.9%), and “love” (32.6%); for women, “work/study” (59.0%), “love” (32.6%). Health and physical condition” (54.4%) followed by “beauty” (46.3%) [Figure 1].
Approximately half of both men and women have concerns about work/study and health/physical condition, which exceeds concerns about love and beauty.

Although it is not enough to cause you to take time off from work, it does cause you to feel physically and mentally unwell, and your work efficiency is reduced. This is called presenteeism in English. It is said that work performance is not fully demonstrated and productivity declines, which has recently become an issue from a “health management” perspective.
Among the young people who answered that they had some kind of trouble in [Figure 1], 579 working men and women were asked if they had any problems that were affecting their relationships at work, and 65.0% of them answered, “I have a medical condition that is giving me anxiety” [Figure 2].
[Figure 2]

Men suffer from “anxiety” and “fatigue,” while women suffer from “irritability” and “rough skin.”
Since symptoms of illness tend to differ by gender, we will now review response data by gender.
Regarding the symptoms of discomfort that they usually feel, most men answered that they “easily get depressed/anxious” (32.3%), followed by “feeling tired/feeling tired all over the body” (29.2%), and ” “It just makes me sleepy” (28.0%).
On the other hand, for women, the top three responses were “I get irritated/get angry” (45.5%), “My skin gets rough” (45.1%), and “I get depressed/anxious easily” (44.5%). In addition to those three items, symptoms that could be considered PMS were included in the ranking, including “increased appetite/wanting to eat sweets,” “feeling tired/feeling tired all over the body,” and “just feeling sleepy.” Although 31.8% of women are aware that they have symptoms of PMS, as many as 86.7% of women suffer from any of the six symptoms ranked above that can be considered PMS [Figure 3].

Regarding the severity of the discomfort that men usually feel, men were “I have symptoms of AGA” (81.7%), “I have symptoms of ED” (74.5%), and “I don’t have confidence as a man” (73.3%). It was in order. In addition, for women, the most common responses were “I have insomnia” (81.1%), “I have monthly periods of irritability that are unique to women” (73.4%), and “I can’t study or work” (73.1%) [ Figure 4].

When asked about complaints that they were aware of but had not been able to deal with, the complaints that men were not able to deal with were “I have symptoms of ED” (42.3%) and “I don’t want to meet people/I want to stay at home.” (37.7%), followed by “I don’t have confidence as a man” (34.7%). The second most serious complaint, “I have symptoms of ED,” has the highest proportion of all respondents who answered, “I am not able to cope with it,” even if they were aware that it was serious. This results in an average of 71.2% for men and 72.4% for women, and it is estimated that the decline in performance due to poor health is approximately 30% for both men and women [Figure 6-2].

We have compiled the data to be .
The top cause of presenteeism for both men and women is psychological anxiety, such as being easily depressed.
For women, “PMS” and “monthly irritability periods unique to women” also affect work performance.
When we asked the people who answered “I am not able to perform at 100%” (302 men and 211 women) in [Figure 6] about the problems that were affecting their work performance, both men and women answered, “I feel depressed easily.” / I feel anxious easily” (22.4% of men, 17.2% of women) was the top response.
Next for men, “I feel tired/feeling tired all over my body” (21.7%) and “I feel irritable/get angry” (17.3%), while for women, “I just feel sleepy” (17.2%) ranked first. This was followed by “I feel irritated/angry” (17.0%) [Figure 7].
The common causes of presenteeism for both men and women include “easiness to feel depressed/anxious,” as well as “feeling sluggish,” “irritability,” and “drowsiness.” There is a difference between men and women from fifth place onwards, with women also having symptoms of PMS (13.5%) and “having monthly irritability periods that are unique to women” (9.7%), which are also causes of decreased work performance. .

Japan Medical Association-certified industrial physician (industrial health consultant) and psychiatrist (designated mental health physician) Representative director of Koraka Labo Co., Ltd. As a contract industrial physician for approximately 20 companies in Tokyo, he is involved in supporting the physical and mental health of workers on a daily basis.
The mind and body are connected. Take care of your mind and body through self-care with food and sleep, and use it to prevent illness. The younger generation is generally energetic, so they tend to neglect self-care.
The health-related characteristics of young people aged 18 to 34 are that they generally have good physical strength, and even if they push themselves a little too hard, it doesn’t cause any major problems, and it is difficult for them to show any signs of poor health in their physical examinations or other numbers. In addition, although people are highly interested in their appearance, such as beauty and body modification, they are not very conscious about their health, and as a result, they tend to neglect self-care. In addition, due to the telework environment of the past few years, direct face-to-face communication has decreased, so there are fewer opportunities for face-to-face consultation, and there are cases where people are left alone with their worries.
PMS is a problem that bothers women. First of all, why not review the basic self-care of “eating” and “sleeping”?
According to this survey, about 30% of women in this generation are aware of PMS symptoms, but I think that many women who menstruate are experiencing PMS symptoms, although the degree may vary. Even if it’s not enough to make you sleepy, many women feel some kind of
discomfort. I don’t think there is just one cause, but not being able to do enough self-care may also be a contributing factor. Self-care doesn’t mean anything special; it’s important to adjust your diet and sleep, which are the foundations of good health. If you are not able to perform basic self-care on a daily basis, such as eating to get the nutrients you need and sleeping to maintain your mind and body, you will be more likely to feel unwell when something stressful happens, and you will also experience symptoms of PMS. There is a tendency for it to get worse. If you feel unwell in your mind or body, first thoroughly practice basic self-care such as eating and sleeping, and increase the amount of time your body and mind can relax. It is important to take care of your condition early and not put up with it. If you are anemic, try to take care of yourself by eating foods rich in iron on a daily basis.
The mind and body are connected. Taking care of your body will also lead to a healthy mind.
The mind (mental) and the body (physical) are linked, and the mind is a part of the body. Taking care of your body will have a positive effect on your mind and feelings. Sometimes we push ourselves too hard to keep our work and private life in order, but when PMS is making your body feel hard, it’s important to take care of yourself and pamper yourself. Relaxing your “I have to do this” rule and resting your body is also an important form of self-care.

Get the right information and start practicing self-care. First of all, take just one step to improve your eating habits.
ED symptoms, which affect one in six young men, are often caused by mental illness.
During interviews with industrial physicians, I don’t often receive consultations about ED from young employees in their 20s or 30s, but I do occasionally hear them say, “Now that I think about it…” during a chat. From what I hear, it seems that young people often experience ED symptoms due to psychological damage, such as being stressed out because their work is not going well or having trouble with
interpersonal relationships at work.
You can’t ask for help, and you can’t find an answer even if you search…It’s difficult to deal with it on your own.
Compared to AGA or rough skin, there is less care that can be taken by oneself for ED, and even if you search on the internet, the only option is to take medicine, but you are reluctant to go to the hospital all of a sudden…I am becoming more and more anxious. It’s easy to get stuck in a negative spiral. It’s hard to talk to others about it, and you don’t know what to do yourself, so you end up in a situation where it’s difficult to deal with it on your own. The causes of ED symptoms vary from person to person, but I think many people find it difficult to seek advice, which is why they are unable to find a way to break out of the negative spiral.
The “basic” self-care is “daily meals.” Let’s start developing better eating habits by taking just one step now.
Daily meals are a basic part of self-care that should not be forgotten. It has been said for a long time that it is important to eat a well-balanced diet. Younger generations tend to think that they can get away with neglecting their meals and tend to put them off, but what they eat has a big impact on their ability to withstand stress, both mentally and physically, and of course on the symptoms of ED. You may think it’s so obvious that it’s boring, but it’s important to do ordinary things properly. It may be difficult to make major changes to your eating habits, but even if you don’t usually have the habit of eating breakfast, try starting to improve your eating habits by taking a small step towards eating breakfast. The accumulation of these efforts will become an important form of self-care that will alleviate your discomfort.
Suntory Beverage & Food Limited will use the results of this survey regarding the mental and physical health of young people as a reference for future activities.
