India | Providing support to those affected by floods and landslides caused by heavy rains
* Emergency assistance launched in response to the devastating floods and landslides that hit Wayanad, in the southernmost state of India. We are soliciting donations through crowdfunding. *
Catastrophic floods and landslides hit Wayanad, in the southernmost state of India, in late July, causing extensive damage. ADRA urgently needs your support in order to provide personalized support to each and every person affected by the disaster.
On July 30, 2024, the state of Kerala was hit by an unusually heavy rainfall of 572mm per hour, causing three major landslides within hours, engulfing villages and leaving many areas isolated. .
As of August 5, the confirmed death toll was 385, with more than 250 still missing. According to a government announcement on August 14, 1,555 houses were damaged or completely washed away. 53 evacuation centers have been opened in Wayanad, and 6,759 people are still staying there, although the number is gradually decreasing.
In India, ADRA’s emergency teams have been working tirelessly to deliver aid since major flooding occurred in the state of Assam around July 10th.
On August 8, ADRA visited several villages in the affected areas and witnessed the dire conditions people were living in after returning to their homes from evacuation centers. The walls, floors, and ceilings of the houses were destroyed, and severe damage from the floods remained, making the situation uninhabitable.
ADRA focused on the hardest-hit areas and delivered tarpaulins to ensure all homes were protected from further damage.
Power outages continue, and water and food are in short supply. Local health centers are overwhelmed and critical medical supplies are severely lacking. The weather is unstable, and the risk of the spread of disease is increasing among people who have been depleted of their physical strength by the disaster, and the following support is urgently needed.
