Mr. Uchida established a dojo for Aikido training called Kaifukan, and Mr. Hirakawa established a coffee shop called Neighborhood Coffee. What kind of thoughts led these two people, who have been friends since elementary school, to unexpectedly create a “common ground” for learning in the same way?
How did these two people, with their different personalities and temperaments, meet and develop such a long-lasting friendship? What it means to live as told by the elders who lived in the Showa era.

Tiles, which have a history of about 5,000 years and have been integrated into every history and culture around the world, are brought to life only when they are installed. This is a discovery tour where you will be taught by top craftsmen, but it is natural that you may not be able to do it well, and you will make discoveries that can be made by experiencing it.
Groups of 4 people set off on 5 experiential tours: 1. Inking → 2. Base production → 3. Tile cutting → 4. Tiling → 5. Grout filling You will proceed according to the flow of the actual construction site. Those who experience the tour will be issued a CERASTA-certified “Tile Craftsman Certification”.

*Fumikazu Abe*
From the 1920s to the 1930s, Osaka rapidly became a metropolis, and was called the “Great Osaka” era.
During this period, modern buildings such as office buildings, department stores, and schools were constructed one after another, and tiles of various colors and shapes were used as interior materials. While exploring the history of tiles in Japan, we will introduce the tiles that decorated the city of Osaka.
On our homepage, we are running a series of columns that approach the appeal of tiles and CERASTA 2024!
The charm of each event content is also a must-read.
Fu Shiraishi/Amane Shiraishi An exceptionally talented tile craftsman who consistently handles all aspects of tile design, tile production, and tile construction. Representative works include “Starbucks Reserve”
Roastery Tokyo” and Ghibli Park’s “Ghibli Warehouse” tile decorations. Click here for advance admission registration

About CERASTA 2024
Tiles have been developed as a building material since ancient times. In Japan, imported tiles spread during the Meiji period, and in the 1950s domestically produced tiles entered a period of prosperity, and history continued on. However, due to the homogenization and rationalization of building materials in recent years, tiles are being replaced by other building materials. Therefore, by conveying the appeal of tiles again, we hope to build a tile culture and enrich people’s lives. We also hope for the continued prosperity of the industry, and by giving children dreams of tile-related work. We planned this event with the aim of making this a dream job.

During the early Showa era, the so-called “Great Osaka” era, Osaka was more economically active than Tokyo and was a major consumer of tiles. Many of the buildings used tiles on their exterior walls, reflecting the visionary architect’s desire to build strong and long-lasting buildings, and even during World War II, they suffered relatively little damage from air raids. Such buildings were able to survive because they were small. At that time, there were many businesses selling pottery in the Awaza and Honmachi areas of the city center, and the local citizens had a deep understanding of pottery. Tile manufacturers also gathered in the vicinity, and the buildings from that time remain today thanks to the people’s understanding and attachment to tiled buildings.

Venue of this event
Osaka City Central Public Hall (completed in 1918) is one of the buildings from that era. This building, where you can feel the history dating back to 1922 when the name was officially unified as “Tile”, marks the first step toward creating a tile culture in Japan.

The logo compares the tiles, which are baked at high temperatures to increase their strength and last for a long time, to a phoenix, which jumps into the fire and gains eternal life. An artist who expresses his designs by burning paper.
Mr. Shino Suefusa.
