Started sample shipment of heat-resistant all-solid-state sodium ion secondary batteries
*Operates in the world’s widest temperature range, expected demand for space and semiconductor-related fields*
Heat-resistant all-solid-state sodium ion secondary battery
Nippon Electric Glass Co., Ltd. (Head office: Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture) President: Akira Kishimoto) is shipping samples of all-solid-state sodium ion secondary batteries (hereinafter referred to as NIB) with heat-resistant specifications that can operate in the widest temperature range in the world (*1) from -40℃ to +200℃. has started. Our NIB is attracting attention in the fields of space, semiconductor manufacturing processes, medical and environmental equipment, etc. due to its wide operating temperature range and safety as it does not generate ignition or gas. This sample shipment is an approach that will quickly respond to these needs and encourage expansion into areas that conventional secondary batteries have not been able to address. The currently popular secondary batteries have the problem that the electrolyte freezes at low temperatures, and the overall material inside the battery deteriorates due to side reactions at high temperatures. In particular, problems at high temperatures occur even with conventional all-solid-state batteries that do not use
electrolytes. For this reason, even for sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries, which are being widely studied, it is not easy to extend the upper limit of their operating temperature.
In contrast, our NIB’s positive electrode, negative electrode, and solid electrolyte are all made of crystallized glass, which has strong resistance to freezing at low temperatures and deterioration at high temperatures. Also, there is no ignition or gas generation.
Furthermore, we have now developed a heat-resistant package using glass sealing technology that takes full advantage of these features. Glass sealing is one of the most reliable technologies and has a proven track record in various fields such as automobiles, home appliances, and communications, and this is the first time it has been applied to battery packaging.
NIB using a heat-resistant package can be used in high-temperature environments of 200℃, and can be designed to meet your needs even in a temperature range exceeding 200℃. In addition, the movement of ions within the battery is promoted in high-temperature environments, making it possible to charge and discharge at ultra-high speeds that cannot be achieved at room temperature. In addition, the glass-sealed package is highly airtight even at high temperatures, preventing moisture from penetrating inside the battery and exhibiting good charge-discharge cycle characteristics. In addition, high-speed charging and discharging at 20C (*2) is possible in an environment of 200℃.
*1. Researched by Nippon Electric Glass Co., Ltd. Survey based on press releases published up to July 2024 and conference presentations in the all-solid-state battery field.
*2. C rate…Unit of current value during charging and discharging. The current value that fully charges (or discharges) in 1 hour is defined as 1C, and 20C represents a current value 20 times that (current value that completes charging and discharging in 3 minutes). Our company is actively promoting the commercialization of
all-solid-state sodium ion secondary batteries, and after this sample shipment, we aim to develop them into an even wider range of applications.
■* Features of heat-resistant NIB that can operate at 200℃*
* ・Package structure: *
It has high airtightness due to glass sealing technology.
* ・Charge/discharge cycle test results at 200℃*
It has good charge/discharge cycle characteristics in a high temperature environment of 200℃.
* ・High-speed charge/discharge test results at 200℃*
High-speed charging and discharging at 20C is possible in a high temperature environment of 200℃.
Charging rate test: Charging curve when performing 4.5V-CCCV charging at each rate from discharge state
Discharge rate test: Discharge curve when performing 1.5V-CC discharge at each rate from charging state
* ■Outline of heat-resistant NIB*
*3. Can also handle temperatures of 200℃ or higher. It can also be used at 300℃ for short periods of time.
*4. Since we use materials that are resistant to overdischarge, the battery will not deteriorate even if it is discharged to 0V. * ■Features of Nippon Electric Glass NIB*
3V/Long Life 3V operation is practical level.
Proprietary technology firmly integrates the solid electrolyte and electrodes, creating a long-life battery.
operating temperature
-40℃~200℃
It is possible to drive industrial equipment and transfer large amounts of data even in harsh environments such as low and high temperatures and vacuum. *Suitable for high temperature ranges exceeding 100℃ (~200℃) due to heat-resistant package specifications. ignition or toxic gas generation.
No risk Adopts a solid oxide with excellent safety.
Because it does not use liquid electrolyte, there is no risk of ignition, and because it does not use sulfides, chlorides, fluorides, etc., there is no risk of generating toxic gases.
No rare elements: No rare metals such as lithium, nickel, or cobalt are used. High degree of freedom in battery design Since it is easy to integrate, increase area, and increase capacity, there is a high degree of freedom in battery design.
Can be charged with minute current
Charging is possible at a low charging speed (low rate). By combining energy harvesting technology (technology that converts small amounts of energy into electricity and utilizes it), we have created a maintenance-free power generation and storage system.
High over-discharge resistance Since materials are used that are resistant to over-discharge, the battery will not deteriorate even when discharged to 0V.
* ■Assumed use of Nippon Electric Glass NIB*
・Use under harsh conditions such as space (vacuum x low temperature), ocean (high pressure x low temperature), medical care (high
temperature), etc.
・Batteries for electronic equipment, mobility, and stationary use that require high safety and flexibility in battery design
・Energy harvesting system that uses light, heat (temperature difference), vibration, etc. as energy sources
・Integration into electronic circuit boards. It is not affected by solder reflow treatment at 300℃ and can maintain stable
charge/discharge characteristics.
・Wireless devices used at extremely high temperatures of 100℃ or higher ・Application to environments/equipment where the generation of corrosive gas is a problem.
