This time, we will take a stroll through the back alleys of Kyoto’s Shijo-dori Street with Maiko Kozuka. Go on a journey to fully enjoy the charm of the ancient capital, Kyoto.
Enjoy a space where Eastern and Western cultures are fused
A state guesthouse built by Meiji businessman Kichibei Murai First, enjoy a space where Eastern and Western cultures are fused at Chorakukan, located in Kyoto’s Maruyama Park.
Kyoto’s local beer and local sake paradise
“Gion Tachinomiya Yamaneko” is a renovated 150-year-old former teahouse. After enjoying the history and culture, head to Gion Tachinomiya Yamaneko to enjoy craft beer from Kyoto Prefecture and over 50 types of local sake. The two are impressed by the assortment.
Exquisite! Pizza and fresh chewy pasta
Fresh pasta has many fans due to its unchanging taste.
Next, we headed to Daniel’s, an Italian restaurant in a different space that appears at the back of a narrow alley.
Sole”. There, the two taste handmade pot-baked pizza and fresh pasta, enjoying the same deliciousness that has remained unchanged for 30 years since the restaurant’s founding.
Mitamura’s favorite “Sakadokoro Terayama”
There are delicious places in the back alleys! “Sakadokoro Terayama” is a representative restaurant and highly praised by Mitamura. New tactile sensation! Charcoal-grilled sweet sea bream, which Kozuka also liked.
Furthermore, “Sakadokoro Terayama”, which I visited twice on my trip so far, is Mitamura’s favorite. Mitamura is looking forward to his return visit, where he will enjoy “Turban Namero” made with fresh turban shells and charcoal-grilled sweet sea bream, an indispensable part of Kyoto cuisine.
Kintsugi accessories revived using traditional techniques
Using kintsugi techniques to turn pottery shards into accessories I came across Karin, a kintsugi accessory shop, in a back alley. Under the guidance of the shop owner, try your hand at making original Kintsugi accessories using pottery shards in a workshop.
Although it was their first experience, both of them completed the work in about an hour and were very satisfied with the result. The end of the trip…
Charcoal grill and handmade soba that go well with alcohol
To end our trip, we headed to the Izakaya Maruya in Shijo Muromachi. Enjoy charcoal-grilled pork with a carefully prepared sauce, charcoal-grilled Kujo green onions, and handmade soba noodles, which are only served 15 times a day. Spend a moving time enjoying the rich scenery and flavors of Kyoto, a blend of old and new.
