27 teams from within Miyazaki Prefecture gathered for the Sports GOMI Koshien 2024 Miyazaki Prefecture Tournament, which was held in a hot and sunny environment. “We will definitely win!” The enthusiastic participants started the event all at once, chanting “CHANGE FOR THE BLUE”! It picks up trash from every nook and cranny, not overlooking large trash or small cigarette butts caught in the crevices.

The venue for Sports GOMI Koshien was the central area of Miyazaki City. It’s hard to notice in everyday life, but if you look around every corner, you’ll see a lot of trash. Most of the marine debris is household garbage, such as plastic bottles and candy bags that are discarded in our daily lives, flow into rivers, and eventually end up in the ocean. After learning this fact, one participant said, “When I heard that in the future the amount of garbage will exceed the number of fish, I realized the importance of picking up garbage.” The total amount of garbage actually collected on this day was 88.54 kg. Sports GOMI Koshien may be a small initiative in terms of the overall marine litter issue, but I felt strongly that through this event, I wanted to create an opportunity for as many people as possible to think about the marine litter issue.

The runner-up team, “Unpaid High School Students,” also scored 4.45kg/1084 points. I got a high score by picking up a lot of bottles, cans, and cigarette butts. The winning “HAY!” team will earn the right to participate in the national competition to be held in Tokyo in December. They are expected to perform well as they have achieved an overwhelming number of points among the 27 teams.
