[New bill vs. old bill] Which design do you prefer? Survey on opinions regarding the new bill design, which has been criticized one after another on SNS | Cocozas Co., Ltd.
*About half of the people have ever received new banknotes! The slow spread of cashless payments may be due to the influence of cashless promotion*
Cocozas Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Yoshito Ando) is a lifestyle media for individuals operated by the company, “COCO the Style”.
https://cocozas.jp/coco-the-style/) conducted a questionnaire survey on “new banknotes and cashless transactions.”
1.About the new banknotes
Question 1: Do you know who is depicted on the new bill?
Image 1
Nearly half (48.4%) answered that they all understood.
13.6% of people said they didn’t know anyone, and 32.6% said they could only understand 10,000 yen bills.
The 10,000 yen bill is the largest unit of banknotes, so many people remember it.
Question 2: Have you received the new banknotes?
Image 2
It can be seen that 54.7% of people answered that they have received the new banknotes, which means that about half of them have already received the new banknotes.
The following comments were received regarding the new banknotes. * “It feels strange because I haven’t gotten used to it yet. I’m a little worried because I heard that there are still many places where I can’t use it.” (Female, 30s) *
* “Honestly, I’m disappointed. It felt like a toy.” (Male, 40s) * * “I welcome the issuance of new banknotes with renewed hope for economic recovery (60s/female)” *
* “I think the font is lame. I’m probably used to it, but the dignity of 10,000 yen Yukichi-sensei is burned into my mind.” (Male, 20s) “Currently, I don’t think it’s as popular as I expected. I think it’s something you don’t see when cashless payments are the norm. I hope to see you soon.” (50s/
male)*
*Let’s look at it by age group. *
Image 3
The number of people in their 20s, 50s, and 60s who answered that they had received new banknotes was relatively high, while the number of people in their 30s and 40s was low.
Question 3: Which do you prefer, the new banknote design or the old banknote design?
Image 4
12.6% of people said that the new banknotes were better, and 54.5% said that the old banknotes were better.
It seems that the old banknotes are still more popular, perhaps because many people have not yet received the new banknotes and are not familiar with them.
In addition, in the comments received for question 2, there were many responses such as “It looks like a toy,” and it is thought that those who were dissatisfied with the font and design said that they prefer the old banknotes.
2.About the new bill design
Question 4: Do you agree that Eiichi Shibusawa was chosen to design the 10,000 yen bill?
Image 5
The following comments were received.
* agreement *
* “I knew he was a great person in Taiga” (40s/female) *
* “Many 10,000 yen designs are made by business people, so I think Mr. Shibusawa’s achievements (the number of people involved in
establishing a corporation) are appropriate.” (Male, 40s) *
* Opposition *
*
“He was certainly a man who left a great legacy, but I have also heard anecdotes about how he had many concubines.I have come to believe that there is no need to force names on bills.” (50s) / woman)*
* “Although his achievements are great, there are problems with his character, so it is difficult to use him for congratulatory gifts.” (Female, 30s) *
Compared to the 1,000 yen and 5,000 yen bills, 10.7% of people were against it. Many of the opposing opinions were related to Eiichi Shibusawa’s relationship with women, and the opinion that it would be difficult to use for congratulatory gifts made me feel “I see.”
Question 5: Do you agree that Umeko Tsuda was chosen to design the 5,000 yen bill?
Image 6
The following comments were received.
* woman *
* “I think it’s appropriate in today’s world where women’s advancement is being promoted” (30s/female) *
* “He is the person who created Tsuda Juku and is someone I can respect.” (Female, 40s) *
* male *
* “I think it’s appropriate because a woman was selected on the old banknote.” (Male, 40s) *
* “Unrecognized person” (30s/male) *
Among men in particular, the most common responses were that they were not interested or did not know what they had done.
As a woman of the same sex, she was active during the Meiji era, when discrimination was said to have existed, and we received multiple comments such as “I respect her” and “I admire her.”
Question 6: Do you agree with the selection of Shibasaburo Kitasato to design the 1,000 yen bill?
Image 7
The following comments were received.
* “Because of my accomplishments as a bacteriologist.” (Male, 50s) * * “I’ve never even heard the name.” (30s/female) *
* “I think he is a person who deserves to be better known to the public.” (Male, 50s) *
* “I know about his achievements, but there are times when I just don’t get it when I look at his face.” (30s/Female) *
Many people said they had never even heard the name.
Despite his great achievements, he seems to be less well-known as a person. Several people said that it should be better known, so perhaps that is the reason behind its selection on the 1,000 yen bill.
Question 7: Old and New Who is your favorite person chosen as a banknote? Image 8
As a result, many people wished for the return of Yukichi Fukuzawa, who was chosen to design the previous 10,000 yen bill.
It is thought that the popularity is high because it is still familiar as the face of banknotes.
Also in the list are Prince Shotoku, who was featured on the old 5,000 yen bill, and Hideyo Noguchi, who was featured on the old 1,000 yen bill.
Question 8: * Who is the great person you would like to have on your bill? * Image 9
1st place was Ryoma Sakamoto. In third place was Shohei Otani, an active baseball player.
The fact that a current player is ranked high, pushing aside so many greats, makes you realize just how great and popular Otani is. Many people also mentioned former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe along with popular Sengoku warlords.
3.About cashless
Question 9: What is the classification of cashless payment you use? Image 10
Regarding the type of cashless payment they use, the most common answer was “credit card”, accounting for 75% of users.
Only 5.5% of people answered that they only use cash, so it can be said that most people use some kind of cashless payment service. Question 10: Are you a cash person? Are you a cashless payment type? Image 12
Half of the respondents preferred cashless payment.
The reason why the new banknotes are not yet widely used may be that more and more people do not use cash in the first place.
The following comments were received regarding cashless payments. * “It’s good because I don’t have to carry my wallet around” (30s/female) * * “In the end, it’s expensive because you have to withdraw money from your account to make a payment.” (Male, 60s) *
* “It’s very convenient, but since I need a smartphone, I’m always worried about losing it and how much charge is left.” (Female, 20s) * * “It’s better to have some kind of cash back compared to cash” (30s/male) * Figure 13
The percentage of people in their 20s and 30s using cashless payments was around 55%, a difference of around 10% compared to people in their 50s and 60s.
Image 14
The higher the annual income, the higher the proportion of cashless payment users.
Many people worry about using too much cashless payments, and many people with low annual incomes may be saving money by using cash.
Summary of this survey
Although there are pros and cons regarding the design of the new and old bills, the majority of respondents said they were fine with either, and the majority said they were not interested in the design. Among those who said they liked the old banknotes, many said “because they were familiar,” and I felt that as people got used to seeing them, their resistance would lessen.
Additionally, due to the spread of cashless payments, the number of people who only use cash has decreased considerably, which may be a factor in the lack of interest in the design of the new banknotes.
